Awakeri School

Room 14 in 2014

Who are we?

We are Room 14, an awesome bunch of 17 girls and 16 boys. Our teacher is Mr Hawkes, he is a groovy, fun teacher. We have started a really sporty tradition; to play a game every afternoon. We are singing songs from the Room 14 songbook, we think we have good voices. We know we are the best class in the school!

Class news

10/12/14 Only a couple of days to go! Yesterday we broadcast all of our radio broadcasts in class. There were some very entertaining ones, like Michael & Tawari's, Korben & Nicole's. We got our reports yesterday. No-one had to run away from home, so that was good. We also got our school magazines and had fun autographing each others'. Tonight is fancy dress and tomorrow night is the senior social.
We went to see Room 13's masks exhibition today. The masks are amazing!! Well done Mrs Merry and Room 13.

26/11/14

We had Mrs Gordon yesterday and we learnt about WOW, the World Of Wearable Arts. We got into groups and had to make a any costume we wanted! We also had to pick a model, guess who volunteered......

3/11/14 Last week we had started another book called NightJohn. It is about a girl who is a slave who meets NightJohn he teaches her how to read.

1/11/14 We just finished reading The Hobbit this week. The students have written some great responses to it. Scroll down to Students' Work to read a couple....
On Thursday Korben had a nasty injury while doing high jump. He has had surgery to repair a broken knee cap, so all the best Korben. Yesterday we had some very exciting relay races with the other senior rooms. We won the A grade relay and two other races, but Room 13 won four races so they probably think they're the best. As if! We won't mention a certain dropped baton!

29/10/14 Our teacher had a big birthday on Monday, so we surprised him with some beautiful cakes, strawberries, balloons etc!! The cakes (baked by Linette and Nicole) suited him perfectly! Football and the Phoenix!

15/10/14 Yesterday we had Mrs Wakelin. We had great fun doing we were making pop out circles. What we had to do was cut out circles and then cut them into separate shapes shapes. After we had done all the circles and glued them on we had to get one shape and trace them on the paper that we glued the circles on and then coloured the shapes in. It was so fun, try it at home. Here is a tip: draw the circles on black paper then cut them out.

13/10/14 Yes!!! School's back! Today students were given a class newsletter and a homework sheet. My brain must have been still on holiday because the due date for the homework is wrong (it should be October not September!) and one of the maths questions confused biking with baking! It's biking! Anyway, I hope all room 14 students' brains are working better than mine.- Mr H

25/9/14 Two weeks ago we handed out a sheet with questions from everyone in the class. It was for a maths investigation. We collected data from rooms 7 to 14, about 240 questionnaires. When we got them back we sorted the data and made graphs in excel. We then copied and pasted it into publisher and typed a hypothesis, an aim and a conclusion. You will see them in room 14's window. There are some fascinating results. Find out what students think about how often we do school production, about dog bites, after school activities, languages spoken in our homes, etc etc.

12/9/14 Well done Emily, 3rd in the EBOP speech contest yesterday, 8th in the AIMS games swimming final, selected for the NZ national training squad for girls football... awesome.
Also awesome the lovely singers who auditioned for the entertainment section in the production yesterday. It was a Room 14 and 13 combo, cool!

28/8/14 We have been going flat out in the Mathletics challenge this week. 27 of our students got Bronze certificates this week! A couple of them are getting near to Golds. Today in English we were looking at sentence lengths. We looked at how varying sentence length is a great way of making writing interesting. Then we decided to write some four word sentences to try and make a story, just to prove that it's hard to write well like that. However.... some people managed to make quite good stories using 4 words sentences!
Hi, my name is. Whoops I forgot. Give me a sec. That's right, it's Tawari.

21/08/14 Check out these portrait sketches. We were looking at proportions, lines, details, shading etc. We used live models as you can tell. We had about 15 minutes to do each drawing (that's as long as we made the models stay still!).

Marco!! Ollie!
We started by drawing full bodies. This is Michael's drawing of Marco. Ollie, as drawn by Emily.
Tess Zoe
Tessa, drawn by Emily Zoe, drawn by Blake.
Taryn Ollie
Taryn, drawn by Shardae. Then we went onto to just drawing the head. This is Ollie, drawn by Michael.
Brya Shardae

18/08/14 Last week we had Harold and Shirley come to our school. Our class was learning about Warrant of Fitness. It was great fun having Harold and Shirley but it was sad for us to see her for the last time with Harold. Thank you and good-bye Shirley!!!!!!!!

26/7/14 Yesterday we started a book called The Hobbit which had been made into a movie. What we have to do is make a map. We had also started art where we have to do observational drawings of classmates.

22/7/14 Yay we're back! Tech at Edgecumbe College today. Science fair entries are due in today or tomorrow morning. For Maori Language Week we are learning this poem:

Te Kaititiro o te Pō
na Katarina Mataira.
1. Te pō, te pō, te pō !
Te pō nui, te pō roa!
Te pō marie!
Kei te moe te whenua.
Engari ko au ….
Ko tēnei te wā oho.
Ko tēnei te wā tītiro.
Ko tēnei te wā haere.
2. Ka tiro au.
Arā he kiore e oma ana.
Arā he tuna e kauhoe ana.
Ara he poaka e raku ana.
3. He aha kē tēnei?
He taitama.
Rū-ū-ū-ū rū-ū-ū-ū
Tena koe e tama!
Rū-ū-ū-ū
Kei te aha koe?
Rū-ū-ū-ū
He aha to mahi i te pō?
4. Hika …
Kā oma kē ia.
Tutū ana te puehu.
Mo te aha rā?
Rū-ū-ū-ū
E mataku ana ki a au?
Rū-ū-ū-ū.

4/7/14 Today we made a game with Mrs Gordon. We had an awesome time. We also had unity hour. Scroll down for a new teacher's message. Happy holidays!!

3/7/14 Today we had a post test for the world cup. Yesterday we had the semi-finals and the final. At morning tea we had the semi-finals Nigeria played U.S.A, 4-nil to Nigeria. At 12 pm we had the finals Nigeria played Cote D'lvoire, 3 nil to Cote D'lvoire. Well done to the refs who reffed all of the games that were played and well done to the kids who were in the teams that had gone to the semi finals too.

1/7/14 Tomorrow is the finals for the soccer but first we need to find out who is going to play Ivory Coast at lunch. Also we have been learning the Maori names for the things in the class. We have been playing games such as hide and seek where someone goes out of the class and Mr Hawkes hides something. He calls the person back in and they have to ask the question "kei hea te potae? - where is the hat?" and then one of the classmates puts their hand up. The person who is looking for it says their name. The person who is answering the question gives them a clue e.g. kei roto i te ruma - the hat is inside the room. When the person has found the hat, another person goes out of the classroom.

23/6/14 For the past few weeks Awakeri school have had their own football world cup. All the kids got put into countries and they will play against the teams they actually played in the real world cup. We had some great captains and refs.

13/6/14 We had Mrs Gordon for 3 days. We did some observational drawings of leaves, some great art work . A few weeks ago we did the same but with two different types of squid.
Today we had the speech semi-final the people who got in from our class: Emily Julian, Luella Howe, Zoe Bennett, Amelie Clements, Tessa Dodson and Lucille Smits. They were great. Lucille, Emily and Luella are in the finals on Tuesday. Go girls!

28/5/14 For the last couple of days we we have been learning how to do beats on the drums. Today we had turns on the drums doing a beat while a couple people played the guitars and the rest sang Islands.

27/05/14 We have been computerless for weeks now as our connections have been upgraded. Hopefully now we are back online and able to keep our page up to date.

08/05/2014 Yay! The first week back after the holidays. We have a lot coming up this term; like Cross Country in week two, Netball and Rugby day, also in week 2; speeches in week five, with the finals in week seven and science fair coming up at the start of term 3. Some of us are a little disappointed because we have no tech this term. We have started a new book called "Barney and the Eels", it's about a boy named Barney who loves to go eeling. We also moved back into our new classrooms at the end of last term. We have five computers and two big white boards. We think its going to be a great term; only 9 and a half weeks long.

16/04/14 Scroll down to Teacher's Message.

15/04/14 Over the past few weeks we have been creating web pages on how to do different skills. Here are the finished ones so far....

Check them out. Are they helpful?

7/04/14 Today we got letters back from the Prime Minister thanking us for sending Taryn's, Lucille's and Marco's letter about the flag. We are hoping that one of our class mates flags becomes the future flag for at least a 100 years. For reading we are reading books that are written from New Zealand authors. After we have read the book we have to do an assignment before we read another book.

4/04/2014 We are all ready to go for the Fun Raiser today. There is some weirdly coloured sherbet for the Sherbet Gallery, Shardae's pony is getting ready, Caleb has brought a coffin for his Horror Tunnel!! Watch out for photos of the activities, they should be colourful!

21/03/2014 Today it was Emily Julian's Birthday. All of her friends organised a surprise birthday party for her. Linette made her a yummy birthday cake but sadly she couldn't be here today. Anyway everybody joined in and bought her a present. Over all she had the best birthday EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YUM YUM! Thinks Emily. Jenae's doing the honours.

21/03/2014 This Sunday is Top School at Awakeri. Our teams are training really hard. The teams are Emily, Tawari, Lachan, Linette, Jenae, Taryn, Kevin, Kaya and the two reserves are Finn and Nicole. Mr Fitz reconds that Te Teko is going to win but we are way better than them; we can win! There are going to be lots of awesome rides and games so come along from 10am onwards.

18/03/2014 Today we are going to tech. The year sevens are doing sewing and the year eights are doing wood work.

14/03/2014 A few weeks ago there was a thing on the news about changing flags so Mrs Cronin had an idea about designing our own flags and we have finished. Today we had to vote for 6 kids to send their finished flags with a description at the back to the parliament. The 6 kids are: Taryn Forbes, Lucille Smits, Ollie Clements, Lochie Brooking, Tessa Dodson and Marco Turner. Hopefully we get to see their design on the actual flag! Scroll down to Students' Work see Marco's flag and his explanation.

12/03/2014 We are studying web pages on how to do things. Here is a cool page made years ago by Troy Jansen on how to make a bey blade.

2/03/2014 Here are some cool photos from camp and the highlights. There were lots... not many low lights, maybe just Glen's dislocated thumb. No he wasn't trying to get his thumb in the Waihi Museum....
Here's a sample:

Jacob Davis Jacob is being launched into the water; in his kayak.
Waimarino rulz Our first raft up at Waimarino. Our instructor Tommy teaches us how to do the TX rescue. Corbin was the volunteer!

25/02/2014 Today we (Room 14!) are going on camp! We are all very excited. We are certain that we will have lots of fun!

24/02/2014 Room 14 is going on camp to Aongatete Lodge for 3 nights and 4 days. We will be orienteering around Katikati on the first day. On the second day we will be going to Martha Mine and a mine rim walk and a whole lot of other stuff. On the third day we will be playing the murder game and we will also be doing a bush walk. On the fourth day we are going to Waimarino to do kayaking, blob jumps, kayak down a hydro slide etc. We get back to school at 4:30 on the 28/02/14.

21/02/14 Today we have Mrs Cronin. We have played bingo Nicole Curtis, Luella Howe, Jacob Davis, Michael Jones, Taryn Forbes and Amelie Clements, were the winners. In the afternoon we finished off work, did a presentation of our mini unit of air and played an awesome game.

17/02/2014 All the people trailing for the top school team have been working really hard these past few days. The people in the team for this year are: Emily, Linette, Jenae, Taryn, Lucille, Kevin, Tawari, Finn, Kaya, Jacob and Lachlan.

11/02/2014 The house captians for 2014 are...... Tawa: Finn, Emily, Korben and Jayden. Rata: Linette, Chloe, Sarah and Marshall. Rimu: Jenae, Poppie, Micheal and Ollie. Kowhai: Tawari, Taryn, Liam and Chloe.

10/02/2014 Everyone is feeling nervous because today we find out who the house captains are....

07/02/2014 Today Mr. Hawkes started teaching us the guitar. We learnt G, D and Mary had a Little Lamb. After lunch we also had house captain elections. We reckon that they were really close, but we find out on Monday. Happy Birthday Tara!

05/02/2014 We have had Mrs. Cronin for the last three days. We learnt about Waitangi Day which is tomorrow and we are excited for a days rest, then back to school on Friday. We have also designed our own flags and we are planning to send them to John Key, (the Prime Minister).

Students' Work

The Hobbit-J.R.R Tolkien

From Smaug's point of view
I come swishing though the trees eager to get to those idiotic lake men. How dare they help those pesky dwarfs steal my gold! I'm invincible! No one can take me down, I'm going to destroy every last one of them. I will watch them burn in my fire, that will teach them. Then I will go back to my precious gold and hunt down those infuriating dwarfs, burn them into ashes or eat them alive. Men running, women screaming through the terror. I'm enjoying this. I swoop down, fire shooting out of my mouth, lighting the town on fire, the flames getting higher and higher. A smile finds its way on my face. I swoop again, getting ready to shoot more fire.
I feel a sudden pain under my armour. I feel weak. I can't breathe the fire… the light fading from the world. I fall tumbling from the sky, the pain taking over my whole body. Thump, the last thing I hear as my eyes close. My heart stops. Everything goes black. I'm defeated.
By Luella

Bilbo Baggins
Bilbo Baggins is quite a small hobbit and is full of exciting magical adventures. He lives in a cosy little house under a hill, with a green wooden door with a nice yellow handle. I haven't seen the movie but I picture him with shabby, torn clothes and Short hair as curly as a noodle. His personality is very unique he can be stubborn at times and he doesn't care what other people think of him because of how small he is. He always likes to solve problems and is usually very sensible. Sometimes he likes to stand up for himself and keeps on moving especially when he is out among Wilderland. The one thing Bilbo Baggins is good at is being very, very brave.

Marco's flag
This is Marco's NZ flag:
The korus' heads are touching because of the different ethnicities in NZ, that mix and create the New Zealand culture.
The red, white and black represent the Maori culture in New Zealand.
The stars represent the Southern Cross. The former NZ flags had the stars on too.
The blue represents the ocean around us as a country.

Here are a couple of sample Thank You letters from camp:

Dear Geoff
Thank you for coming on camp you were a great help. Thanks for taking me in your car I thought I would be walking the whole way.
Thank you for helping us with our group activities as well especially at Sapphire Springs when the kids beat the adults at the game we played. We all had lots of FUN!
It was a great help that you helped in the kitchen when you didn't even have to. Thanks to you we all ate that morning and night. We don't hold anything against you even though you did dislocate Glenn's thumb.
Kind Regards
Zoe

Dear Rebecca
Thank you for coming to camp! I really appreciated your help over those four days, camp was really cool!
Thank you for helping me remember stuff, for example: hats, shoes, bag, and so on it was a huge help! Also thank you (not) for tipping me out of my kayak, the water was ( I'm not at Waimarino now) freezing!
I have really enjoyed camp and I learnt lots of things from how to identify trees by their bark to how to ultra low ride on the back of a kayak! One thing I will remember will be how fast you go when you go down the slide at Waimarino it was really cool! I'll also remember prosecuting my sister, but getting put in the dock myself!
Once again thank you!
Yours sincerely
Ollie Clements

Teacher's Message

One week to go. Marae stay is over, it was cool. Intensives are over. They were cool (and rather wet). Reports have almost been written, last chance to get something good in your reports! We are practising for fancy dress - the good old Gay Gordons. This is despite quite a few students being injured. There have been some freak accidents, like Korben breaking his knee cap by landing on the high jump bar, Linette breaking a bone in her foot by changing direction while running, Nicole falling and breaking ker wrist while playing touch.....( there are about six more!)
It's cool to watch people on crutches still keeping in time with the dancing!
A big thank you to our parents who helped at the marae and intensives. You were a big help.
All the best everyone for the last week of school, happy holidays and all the best for high school all you year eights. You are ready to shine!
Kia ora everyone
Barrie Hawkes
