Awakeri School

Room 14 in 2013

Who are we?

We are... a happy class with 27 kids: 10 boys and 17 girls and we drive Mr Hawkes MAD (not all the time but most of the time) The website monitors are Toni Campbell and Ngaio Wilson.

Class news

18 December. Hmmm, radio broadcasts were incredible. Tommy Rosewarne was Tommy Beiber in one, then if that wasn't bad enough, he was Tiny Tim doing Tiptoe Through the Tulips in Isaiah's broadcast! Very very funny. We also had Sharni Gaga, lots of Possum ads and news items (thanks Nakisha), Sarah being dissed almost as much as Chloe Chocolate Brownie, Finn and Matthew being very funny, etc.
Bye bye lovely year eights. Happy holidays everyone from Room 14. Come back and visit next year when our room is three metres wider!

12 December Here is a drawing of an awesome unicorn by Emma Paine! She does the news page for the website.

Emma's awesome unicorn!

10 December Today's radio broadcasts were very entertaining, keeping up a great standard. Sharni Gaga even sang, Poppy Rika used a cool lively voice and Ruby Murphy produced Ruby FM. Ruby tried to sell her brother Ben in the broadcast, but there were no takers! He was cheap too.
For Homework we had to do our ten highlights of the year. Here are some of them.....
Room 14 Highlights 2013
Playing Spotlight at camp. Chloe B heard the leaves rustle. She thought it was a person, but when she looked up a great big fat red-eyed possum was half a metre away from her face!
Getting a letter back from a jubilee ex-pupil person.
Thrashing Rm 12 at rulz and flag wars and pa wars.
Ngaio's mum doing the moonwalk in the introductions game at camp. Ngaio's daily bus stories.
People getting thrown in the pool. "It was COLD!" said Chloe H.
The stunning last kapa haka performance.
Finn having his sugar rush incident at camp. He couldn't even write. Way too much jelly!
Seeing octopi at Otarawairere.
Matthew losing underwear at camp.
Slime wars at camp.
Practising the Gay Gordons!
Possums at night at camp.
Possum getting the ball out of the tree.
Finn being excited to be punished in the mock court at camp.
Lunchtime soccer, room 14 v the rest.
Finn stepping on glass at camp.
Someone farting in their sleep at camp.
Making people laugh in radio broadcasts.
Winning the international football game.
Being at Awakeri School when it turned 100. It was special performing kapa haka at the jubilee.
Mr Hawkes saying Yes Richie to Sarah when we were playing headbands. Sarah was Richie McCaw. Mr Hawkes started hitting his head on Matthew's table!
Sitting next to Tommy. He would always cheer Poppy's day by singing.

This year rooms 12,13 and 14 are getting made 3ms longer. Today Finn found out that each person has 4m3 of air in room 14. We are nearly at the end of the year and room 14 have just had their last lot of home work. YES!!!! Tomorrow is Poppy's and Ruby's last day. They will be going to Australia. Have fun. Fancy dress is on Monday, on Tuesday it is the year 7 and 8 dance and on Wednesday all the classes will be in a big end of year water fight. So bring your togs.

9 December Today before school, Ngaio and Nakisha sold books on the foyer. They sold quite a few but when Mr Fitz put them on the spot at assembly, "How many books did you sell?" They said "I don't know!" Every day Ngaio keeps us entertained with her latest current event. It is nearly always something exciting that happened on the bus. Today she didn't come to school by bus, but luckily, she saw something strange while driving through Te Teko. What was it" "I don't know" Describe it.... "I can't" After further questioning we were none the wiser.
Next we were writing diaries and Mr H said to Ngaio, "I hope you know what you are writing about". She assured him that she did know lots of things.
"I do know what one and one is..."
"What it is Ngaio?"
"One!"

5 December

Over the last couple of days we have been doing radio broadcasting. We had to write a script and then broadcast it to the class. We have had all sorts of themes like: Toast FM, Salad FM and lots more crazy things! Today Matthew, Finn, Courtney and Georgia all did their broadcasts. Georgia sang one of the songs. Finn's broadcast was hilarious.

Thursday 28 November. Well there was the usual number of people in our room before school, trying to solve challenges, write messages etc. Then Elana and Keely (both exRoom14s from last year, but they frequent our room anyway) started drawing the funny class photo on the white board. Everyone helped and this is it....

Thursday 14 November Today half of our class are at interschool athletics sports at Edgecumbe. Lots of them have got ribbons, even Georgia, whose mum reckoned she wouldn't need a safety pin (meaning she wouldn't get a ribbon!). We have just started doing softball skills. We are getting better at catching with the mitt. Swimming started too. We are also studying human body systems. There are some pretty complicated ones, like the endocrine system, but everyone is learning lots about their ones. We are reading Holes by Louis Sachar. It's a cool story.

Thursday 31 October Today Poppy and Adele received replies to their letters to people who went to the jubilee. It was really cool that we got some replies. It sounds like the people who received letters really appreciated it. They wrote about what school was like when they went to Awakeri. Adele's letter said that the year 7 & 8 boys had to mow the lawns with push mowers, and the yr 7 & 8 girls had to clean the rooms and the toilets!

Wednesday 23 October

Our school jubilee is coming up soon. We will be doing parts of the production and Kapa Haka. Also the disco is on Friday!!!! We all cant wait!!! We have been practising athletics, we go in a rotation, today we are going to long jump and discus. Congratulations to the people who went to Group day in our class, Sarah, Adele, Tommy, Courtney, Chloe and Jadyn!! And a special congratulations to Emma For winning Supreme Champion for her dog!!!! Hope you all have a good weekend.

Friday 20 September

Today we played Trivial Pursuits and there were a lot of hard questions and some easy questions. We also are singing some songs in assembly, we are singing a song that goes:

" First you make your fingers click,
then you stamp your feet,
both hands slap your knees and clap on the beat"

It's a round. And the other song goes:

Late last night before she went to bed,
Mrs O'Leary hung a lantern in her shed
and then a cow kicked it over winked her
eye at her and said "There'll be a hot time in
the old town tonight FIRE, FIRE, FIRE"

Friday 13 September

Thursday 27 June

We just got back from a FIRE DRILL!!! It was not a real fire. Georgia said that if there was a fire she would stand there to keep warm because at the moment it is very cold!!!!!!!! It is now winter!! nooooooo.

Wednesday 26 June

Today for current events, Jadyn shared that a man walked ACROSS THE GRAND CANYON ON A TIGHT ROPE!!! He walked about a kilometre and if the wind blew then he would fall off and die. So we tried to see how long we could walk on a tight rope. We walked across the beam surrounding the Adventure Playground. 4-5 people fell off! Then we tried to do a rope that actullay wobbled. All of us fell off. Sadly. A big well done to Nakisha, Jack and Isaiah for getting into the NEXT cross country!!! Jack came first in his race, Nakisha came seventh and Isaiah came ninth!!!!! HI FROM ALL OF US IF YOU ARE READING THIS, CHLOE!!! Yes, Chloe is STILL overseas. She is soooo LUCKY. I think that all of us are SUPER jealous!!! She was being smart about peer pressure. Today we have 5 people doing their speeches, we do a speech draw each day to see who goes first. Nakisha was hoping not to pick out number 1, and guess what number she got! That's right she got number 1. Shows if you do not want some thing you get it!

A lot of training is ahead of us at school and at home. You will be fit enough to get a good placing but one thing there are a lot of hills to run up and down. We now are having our assemblies at 2:30 pm.
We are learning about Parihaka. Parihaka is a peaceful village that Te Whiti O Rongomai built in 1867 when the land wars were happening with the Pakeha. Parihaka can teach us a lot!

The Hobbit reponses:

Bilbo Baggins

Bilbo is good, I think mainly, because he is too nice to be EVIL!!!!
Bilbo has a very big role in The Hobbit, well, because he is the Hobbit. He is the lucky 14th person in this adventure.
Bilbo is like me in a few ways.
First off, at the start of the book, he is quiet and would rather be at home with a book in front of the fire than be outside in the cold, adventuring.
Bilbo is also like me in another way. His Baggins side is quiet, calm, respectable and scared of adventuring. But his Took side is adventurous, outgoing and daring. Like him, I am quiet and don't like to go too far outside my comfort zone. But on the other hand, I am adventurous, love exploring and I love the feel of adrenalin running through my veins.
So comb your foot hair and relax for an awesome book.

Georgia L.C.

Gollum

With his teeth like splinters and eyes like moons, Gollum is actually quite a fearsome character. I mean, he sits in the dark with a magic invisibility ring on, stalking stray goblins. I love the way he is so easily surprised. One minute he's about to eat someone, the next, he's sitting on the floor bawling! But for a low life creature like him he's pretty smart. I wonder where he got those riddles and where did he find the ring? So much is not known about him. What was his real name before he took on Gollum? I felt quite sorry for him. Sitting in a cave, catching fish and goblins all alone in the dark must get very lonely. Still, he is a horrible thing. His raspy voice is really freaky. The way he talks makes himself sound like a horror movie.
So anyway, "Make hassste, make hassste," and stop reading this before Gollum gets you!

Finn S

Thorin:

Thorin is the son of Thrain, son of Thror, also known as King Under the Mountain.

Thorin is grim, a very serious dwarf. He is the leader of a company of dwarves and a hobbit and wizard who are off to the Lonely Mountain. Thorin has a very long beard. He dress in chain mail and over the top wears some robes.

Like Bilbo Thorin is a very important part of the story because he is the one who set up the company to go to the desolation of Smaug. He has a soft spot for gold and an even bigger soft spot for the arkenstone. He even says in the story that it is priceless.

As one of the elders of the group, Thorin is an excellent warrior and will take anything on with his bare hands. He is probably one of the strongest warriors of the dwarfen race.

Thorin is a brave, caring, strong dwarf. But he is a formidable foe.

Jamie F

Smaug

Some people may've pictured Smaug as a dark black or grey beast destroying everything with his fiery breath, but I saw him differently. Of course he was still burning everything to the ground, but it was his appearance that made him unique.
I saw him as a dark indigo scaled creature with deep dark blood red eyes. The ever treacherous invader smothered by his greed for gold. Now I'm sure sure that by my choice of words that you know Smaug is a 'baddie'.
Smaug has a horrid temper and gets worked up over hardly anything. An example of his temper and greed is when Bilbo Baggins of Bag End steals one tiny cup from under Smaug's nose, Smaug set out and: burned things to the ground, ate the dwarves ponies etc.
Smaug is killed when he is attacking Laketown (thanks to Bilbo, "I am barrel rider!"). An arrow shot by Bard enters the dragon's mighty chest.

Smaug still lies on the lake floor, but still the survivors of Laketown don't dare to dive in the deep!

I Am poems

I am a trained ninja in weirdness
I wonder if rainbows really have gold underneath them
I hear the silence and I break it
I see the colour in the darkness
I want to know why
I am a trained ninja in weirdness

I pretend to know what I am doing
I feel the flying platypus's wisdom
I touch when it clearly says "DO NOT TOUCH"
I worry I will be alone
I cry when no one laughs
I am a trained ninja in weirdness

I understand no one is perfect (except me of course?!)
I SAY "MMMMMM…I understand!" when I don't
I dream of my future life
I try to be me
I am a trained ninja in weirdness

Lara W

I am cheerful and sporty.
I wonder when I'm going to die.
I hear the sound of elephants running when people walk around the class.
I see the waves crashing at the beach.
I want to go somewhere where it's not so hot!
I am cheerful and sporty.

I pretend I am a mermaid when I'm swimming.
I feel like a monkey when I'm climbing trees.
I touch the water when it's a hot day.
I worry about things too much.
I cry about my 2 grandads that are dead.
I am cheerful and sporty.

I understand that you can't live forever.
I say the younger children shouldn't get the blame.
I dream about me getting eaten!
I try to be a better person.
I am cheerful and sporty.

Ruby M

I am spontaneously sporty and funny
I wonder if a ninja is watching me
I hear the sound of a drummer playing hard out
I see the ocean and some huge waves in front of me
I want to get out of this heat
I am spontaneously sporty and funny

I pretend I am a pro surfer
I feel the power within
I touch the water and feel like I am in heaven
I worry that I can't handle the heat
I cry when I'm not doing enough sport
I am spontaneously sporty and funny

I say you can never surf for too long
I dream I can do anything
I try my hardest to learn the guitar
I am spontaneously sporty and funny

Alex C

I am a nerd who likes books
I wonder what it feels like to die
I hear clapping
I want to preform
I am a nerd who likes books

I pretend I am a spy
I feel red velvet
I touch the long soft velvet dress I am wearing to the ball
I worry this dream land will overtake me
I cry when I hear the song Vesper
I am a nerd who likes books

I understand that everyone is not perfect
I say be who you are on the inside not the outside
I dream that one day my dad will come home
I try to be the person everyone wants me to be
I am a nerd who likes books
