Awakeri School

Room 14

Who are we?

Room 14... Room 14 hmmmm. We are a class of 30 rocking 11-12 year olds who are lucky enough to get Mr. Hawkes as our teacher in 2012 (the year of the black water dragon).

Class news

Thursday December 20th Yes, we've all gone on holiday! Bye to our lovely year eights off to high schools in Whakatane, Hamilton, Cambridge, Kawerau...
A holiday assignment (optional!!) For all those students who've studied The Hobbit the last couple of years in Room 14, if you want to write your thoughts on the movie The Hobbit and write about what it was like compared to the book, I'm keen to publish your thoughts on this web site. Email me! Happy Holidays - Mr H

Friday December 14th Today we had the homework awards. If you did all the minimum homework, all year and did it perfectly, you could have got 660 marks. Over half the class got more than 660, awesome effort!! 3rd place was Molly Bradley with 990, and was Savannah Jones with 1035.5 marks and 1st was ....... Sammy Looney with 1059.5 marks. Aren't they fantastic! Also today Savannah found out that her design was chosen to go on the School Magazine cover. She also had her design for the mural painted on a wall earlier this year. Savannah the designer!

Thursday December 13th

Well its 4 school days away from the end of the year and all the Year 8's will be missed...all the Year 7's will become leaders. GOOD LUCK AT HIGH SCHOOL. The Senior Social is coming up and the Year 7's have to bring some supper for the Year 8's, our gift to them. Fancy Dress is also coming up and its going to be sad to see our friends leave...*sob sob*... I'm going to cry. I have had a blast being Room 14's Website Monitor but its time for me to say my good byes... =( ...I will do one more update when I can, hopefully on the last day if I get a break from WATER FIGHTING!!!!
Don't forget wrestling as well Georgia! Thanks for doing a good job of Rm 14's web page.- Mr H

Wednesday November 21st

On Friday we had a sausage sizzle where they sold Sausages, Ice Blocks, Lollies, Chips and Hamburgers. OM NOM NOM!!!

Wednesday November 4th
Well today there is a solar eclipse. Lila brought along a welding mask so we could look at it, instead of burning our retina which apparently has no feeling...everyone has had a go and I have photos for you...

You have to use your imagination for this one! This one looks like a face!

Friday November 2nd

For yesterday...PINCH AND A PUNCH FOR THE FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH...that was shorter in my head...Well I'll tell you about the Marae stay...well, the part that went as planned.

We got on the bus from school and then at the Marae we were welcomed on by the Tangata Whenua. We had some food and drink after to break the Tapu. We went for a walk with Rooms 8 and 9 and learned about Wairaka and what she did to save the women on the waka, Mataatua. We went to see Muriwai's cave and then had to wash our hands afterwards. We went back to the Marae and did activities and then Rooms 8 and 9 went back to school and we had afternoon tea. We then went for a walk up to Toi's Pa wich was very tiring. We went back once again to the Marae and just before dinner after we had sat down Mr Hawkes announced that Siri had passed...it was a very sad dinner. After dinner we went in to the Whare Nui to listen to the a man named Mr Bluett. He said a karakia for us because of Siri. We sang He Honore and then he said more and we sang Taku Rakau. He then answered any questions we had for him about what he told us. We then had supper and went to bed. In the morning we had to leave at 11 instead of 2.30pm to get to school for Siri because she was coming to our school one last time.

It was a sad day...to sum it up...almost everyone was crying by the end of it all...More details in the News Page.

I have updated you all on the current gossip so bye...until next time

Wednesday October 24th

Room 14's sketches, can you guess who the artist has drawn? More of Room 14's Sketches, beautiful they are. =)

Sketches done last term.

Term 4 ALREADY!!!

Well it's a day after the long Labour weekend which was after Ag Day. In the first week after the holidays we mainly focused on our Waiata and Songs for the Marae visit next week. Room 14 stays the night after being welcomed on by the Tangata Whenua. The next day we welcome on the other classes including Room 13. They stay the night and then the next day welcome on Room 12 and others and then 12 stays the night. The next day is the last and 12 welcomes on the last classes. Then everyone goes home. Ag Day was fun for all, hot food, hot drinks, and chocolate sundaes. OM NOM NOM!!!
So the second week of Term 4 and we are practising hard for Athletics in 2 weeks. High Jump, Long Jump, Standing Jump! Jump JUMP JUMP!!! Also Discus, Shot Put and Vortex.

Friday 28th Sept

Lots of room 14 people stood out in production week. Bailey's excellent acting as the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham was memorable. Sam and Arko did a fine job of leading the kapa haka. Molly was a great whip cracker. Our flautists sounded awesome. Bleyne's terrific drumming in the orchestra impressed too. Happy holidays everyone!

Thursday September 13th

Well...This morning we flew our Hot Air Balloons. R14 has been waiting a long time for the perfect frosty morning when the ground is moist. Sadly half of the class's balloons caught on fire either straight away or in mid-air (that was mine). The Balloon that went the furthest was Felicity, Sam, Keely and Molly's. It got over the trees in the paddock, over the fence on the other side of the school. WELL DONE GIRLS! If you want to look at some photo's go to this page.

Friday August 24th

I'm so sorry that I haven't updated this page in a while but...I will try to every week unless nothing good has happened. So lets get started.

Production practices have started and some people have their costumes. We have done quite a lot of art e.g. shoe, bug, portrait sketches and sunset paintings. A lot of people have finished writing the draft of their Pick-A-Paths and have designed a cover but some people have to finish still. Yesterday we had to do a project on something starting with 'C'. There was a variety of different things including Creepers (off the game of Minecraft), Cupcakes, Chihuahuas, Cherries, Cougars, Cheese and many many more. Right now I am supposed to be doing maths but I chose the right time to do website :) Be ready to read some more next Friday.

Wednesday August 1st

It is the third week into Term 3 and Science fair is all over except for those who got into the EBOP Science Fair...1 person in our class is getting a prize and that is...Moana Lengkeek. Also for the Awakeri Olympics, France won altogether Canada came second and Kenya came third. We are having a senior Olympics now and the sports include Pull Ups, Hurdles, Basketball, Synchronized Movement, Wrestling and Frisbee Throw. We have already done Hurdles and Pull Ups and on Friday we are doing Basketball and Synchronized Movement. Well I think I have you updated on everything that has happened so...

Bye, Got to get to work. :-/

Friday July 20th

Well it has been one week since we got back from the holidays. Good news is that the Science Fair Prize Giving is today...to find more information visit the news page (a lot of people in our class have done well). Also the school is having an Olympics type thing and we have all been assorted into different countries e.g. Spain, China, France, Kenya and lots of others. I will keep you updated but now I've got to go and do my work...

Thursday June 28th Yesterday we finished The Hobbit!! Some people wrote some cool responses to the book. Scroll down to Students' Work for a look. It's worth it, go on!!

Friday June 22nd

Well its Friday and its almost the end of term...waaaaa...one more week to go. Yesterday we had a coin trail to raise funds for Karen Hanlen to go to the Olympics. I think there will be more about that on the news page. Today Karen will be coming to our school at assembly time and some of the girls in our class have created a small speech to say to her. Also well done to the team of 4 who won Lit Quiz. If you want to read more about that it is on the news page. Yesterday we played Awakeri rules with room 12, 13 and 14 (us) and that is a game where there are three balls and you have to throw it into the soccer goals to score...

Also the winner of the speech finals was Aaron Fretwell and in close second was Bailey Carter and finally in 3rd was Lauren Hall.

We have started to write Pick-a-Path stories and it is pretty difficult to figure out what goes to what page and make sure the choices are going to good pages and meeting pages with other pages...it is quite confusing. I'm not sure when they will be done but I'm sure they will be really good reads...We hope.

So that is some of the interesting things we have done these past 2 weeks and I'm sure you wouldn't want to hear about how we did maths and smart words and all the other regular stuff...

Oh...I've got to go and write some more of my Pick-a-Path story so I guess it's bye until the next entry!!! :)

Thursday June 7th

So far in the past 2 weeks we have had all of our class say their speech.Yesterday we had the semi finalists say their speeches... the semi finalists from our room were Bailey Carter, Felicity Klein Ovink, Thomas Fretwell, Amelia Howe, Keighley Clarke and Molly Bradley... the people from our class that got into the FINALS are... Felicity, Bailey and Thomas. So well done to those three and lets hope one of the people from our class wins. The finals are open to anyone who wants to come and listen to the speeches so check out the news page (titled News in the table to your left) to see when that is.

Monday May 28th

Hola, sorry to have kept you waiting for such a long time for an update but you know school always busy, busy, busy!

A couple of weeks ago Miss Reeve had been in our class and we have made our own versions of Alice in Wonderland. Some examples would be Hunger Land, Twilight Land, Alice in Mermaidia and Alex in Riffletopia. They are in our class being read by others.

Also we have been practicing our pepeha because it was our week to host assembly last week. Mr Hawkes showed us how to say and write our own Spanish pepeha so we have been practicing that as well. Jessie was the one who said her Spanish pepeha instead of her Maori one in assembly.

We have also been practicing science and testing because science fair is coming up and we have to choose whether to do a science or technology project.

Down below in the students work section is part of the book that Jessie wrote (Alice in Hunger Land)!!!! ;)

That has what happened so far in this past couple of weeks...

So I guess its...

Bye for now

Monday April 23rd

Hello people of the world,

Its a new term and everyone has had an awesome holiday. Theres not much to talk about except for the fact that ... um...um well there is no fact really. Well anyway, this term I think we get the choice whether we want to swap seats so thats good for everyone I guess and Cross Country is this term so thats not good for anyone at all except for the people who like running. You probably guessed this, but I don't like running!!!!!

So I guess its bye for now

OR IS IT... DUN DUN DUUUUUN

Thursday March 5th

'Good morning sunshine the earth says hello' a piece out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (MOVIE).

Well anyway Hello today is the last day of term and we are doing a reward afternoon. There is a variety of things to do including Marbles, Crafts, Movie, play areas by rooms 1,2,3, and an area to scoot, rollerblade and skateboard. So that's what we are doing this afternoon.

Right now Mr Hawkes is telling us how to do the artwork that we are doing today. It has to be about something that happened at camp and you/I have to be in the middle in the photo and there has to be a background. Well I guess most paintings have a background. Anyway I will get a photo of a finished one and then you will be able to get what I mean. As someone told me a picture means 1000 words. Oh I remember a movie told me.

Well ... um...Bye until next Term.

Thursday March 29th

I need to tell you guys about camp but it would take sooooooo long so I will give you the link to the photo page. Also, scroll down to Students' Work and the haiku poems will give you some hints of camp life!

Sorry guys for the riddle answer on the 14th I gave you the wrong one so here is the real one: A grandmother, a mother and a daughter.

Wednesday March 14th

Remeber when I told you guys about the koru art we did well here is a photo of Felicity's koru art...

Here we are BEAUTIFUL isn't it... I like the sprinkles in the background.

Okay none of you guys have emailed in the answer to the riddle so I'm just going to give the answer. A Mother, a mother and a daughter and a daughter.

Soooooooo heres whats happened in the week well not much really but today Mrs Purches is in our class again and we have been having to draw ourselves. I will put a photo on the the internet in the next upload because we have just learnt how so hopefully there will be more in the following weeks and months.

Bye for now.

Thursday March 8th

Well, I have a lot of catching up to do so lets start from Friday.

Friday was so fun and altogether we made $1752 so each class gets about $600 each for their camps. Everyone had heaps of fun and the busiest stall, to me, was probably the Hippie House which was run by the fabulous MOLLY BRADLEY. Speaking of Molly she, Hannah and Courtney Van der horst did Gamblers Stakes. Visit the news page to find out what on earth that is if you don't already know and who won what.

And yesterday (Wednesday) was swimming sports. To find out the results for the house relay team go to the news page which has been updated today. Our class did really well.

Friday Feb. 24th Scroll down to Students' Work to read Arko's cool true horror story. The court case for the logging truck driver that hit the bus is actually happening right now.

Wednesday February 23rd

I am not going to put the answer to the riddle because only one person so far has emailed in and it was my Dad.(He told me the riddle so it doesn't count) Remember to EMAIL IN YOUR ANSWERS by clicking the link from last week!!!

Oh Yeah! Today's word of the day is MELANCHOLY from the story The House at Pooh Corner by A.A Milne.

We went to Ohiwa on Friday and it was very very hot. Our first activity was searching the low tide zone for crabs and a lot of people got very muddy. Then after being hosed off we ate and then looked in a square meter place with our group and answered our questions on crabs and then ate some more. After all this we went to the mangrove area where we studied the aerial roots and answered some more questions. After this we came back discussed all our answers and then went to choose a spot to sketch the harbour. Once we had all finished our sketches we gathered then went to our cars and went back to school. So yeah that was Friday. Check out some photos.

In the next upload I might tell you the answer to the riddle but only if you keep emailing in... DO IT!!!!!!!!

Bye! ;-)

Thursday February 16th

Today instead of a joke I'm gonna put in a riddle: A Mum a Mum and a daughter and a daughter walk into an empty room and none of them leave but there are only 3 people in the room. How is this possible? I will tell you the answer in the next upload. In the mean time email in your answers.

YAAAAY tomorrow we are going to Ohiwa Harbour to study estuaries. Our day has been planed sort of like this: Get there, look at mud at low tide, eat, look at creatures in the mid tide zone, go to the mangrove area, get hosed off, change clothes, lunch, art, school. Pretty awesome day right? Today we did some more koru art with Mrs Purches wich includes reflectionsand tracing. I will take a photo next week when we learn how to upload photos

So bye... for now.

Thursday February 9th

Joke- Q. What do you get if you cross a kangaroo with a sheep. A. A Woolly Jumper. HAHAHAHAHAHOHOHO

Hello I am Georgia RK Room 14's website monitor for this year unless I get fired which I hopefully won't teehee. Hopefully lots of photos and news will be put up because I am in R14 so I know every little thing that happens. Well most of them anyway. I will put up the word of the day but we don't have one yet.

Currently we have done one guitar lesson, one singing session, some art and the normal maths and spelling that we do at school.. Our art is Koru Families and what we have to do is place korus on the page as our different family members and then put patterns on them representing what we like about that certain person. Oh yeah on Friday the 17th we will be going to Ohiwa Harbour because we have been learning about estuaries.

Students' Work

The Hobbit

I think the Hobbit is a great adventure story. I think J.R.R Tolkien has a way of people feel connected to Bilbo Baggins. There are lots of parts in the story that get you really worried and make you have the same emotions as the characters. I think that all the characters in the book are so different and all have opposite opinions about each other. I think that the dwarves where very greedy and that they were very unfair to Bilbo Baggins. To me Bilbo Baggins is very modest loyal and brave. I think I liked the book because it has a good ending that finishes everything off perfectly.
Molly Bradley

The Hobbit is my absolute favourite book in the whole world. My favourite bit was when they had a big as war and how they had described the arrows whistling through the air was cool and people were dying. It didn't have a happy ending. The scary bits was when they went in the room to get the gold. It was the best described bit in the book. I liked the picture it painted in my head.
By Arko.

Beorn is my favourite character in The Hobbit. He can shape-change into a bear. He is actually a bit like me: not very nice to his enemies but nice if he's in a good mood. He is big, tough and part bear. Beorn loves tales and stories. If you make up something good, he can be very generous. Easily angered, must be genetic (the bear thing). From the book, I gathered that he likes nature and animals. Beorn doesn't eat meat. He keeps intelligent animals that can understand human speech. I chose Beorn for this because he's a bit like me, kind of grumpy, friendly sometimes and part bear.
Amelia

There And Back Again, by Bilbo Baggins. When I hear this iconic phrase, I think of one of the best books ever written. The Hobbits Tale by J.R.R. Tolkien. When I heard this book for the very first time, I was overwhelmed with joy and
happiness. The book kept me in suspense the whole way. To me this book was more than just a story, it was more of an adventure. To sum up: I loved this book, and would be more than happy to read it, or listen to it again.
Bailey Carter

Dear J.R.R Tolkien (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien)
I really enjoyed your book "The Hobbit". It was really exhilarating for me, it really sucked me into the story. The way you've written it is so amazing, you've described all your work so well it seems it's real. As I sat listening I could imagine it so clearly, I was in the story standing right next to your character Bilbo Baggins. You have added in a lot of imaginative creatures, that's one of my favourite things about you and your book. You let your imaginative side run wild, just like me. You can think of anything , believe it and make that anything come true no matter if it's real, make believe or written on paper it makes me feel like I'm in the story standing next to Bard with a bow and arrow ready to shoot Smaug the evil dragon in the left side of his chest. You've described the story so well I've been in the book the whole time watching your characters fight the goblins or wargs or burying Thorin Oakinshield king under his mountain with the arken stone and his sword on his chest. As you can see I have taken a lot of your story in with enjoyment. I will have to start reading your other books. I'm also dying to see the movie of the "The Hobbit". Thank you for your commitment in writing this story.
Elana Spod

My favourite character was Bilbo, and I have picked him for my description. I really connected with him when he was at his bravest and stood up for all his friends and didn't back down on what he is sent for. I think if I were in the story or if Bilbo was in the real world I would probably be his friend, even though he's not the best looking. I liked Bilbo's bravery when he had lured the spiders away and saved the dwarves from being eaten. I also connected with Bilbo for his patience and cautiousness in his adventure.
Lila

Gollum is my favourite Hobbit character. He is an old character off the Lord of the Rings. He is a skinny scary character with about 10 pieces of rough grey hair. He speaks with a croaky quiet voice. He always talks to himself saying 'My precious!' He thinks everything is about himself. Bilbo gets lost and ends up in the goblin's tunnels with Gollum, scared. Bilbo finds the ring that turns him invisible. Gollum gets the ring off Bilbo but loses it in the goblin tunnels. He begins to worry and cry out.

A True Story

That day I was sick. It was the afternoon.
My mum said, “I’m going to pick up Renske.”
I turn on the game. I pick Modern Warfare 2. I start to play.
Bang. I shoot someone.  I don’t notice when I shoot him, a terrible thing happens.
The dogs bark.  I walk outside. Noone at the gate. I walk to the mail box. I see my mum’s car. I panic. I run to my bike. I bike to my neighbour’s paddock. I see the bus and kids lying on the ground and some standing. A kid is half hanging out of the window. It’s like a horror movie. There’s kids from 5 to 17 years old.
I see my brother Kayne. He has a big chunk of meat hanging from his leg.
I go home. Lots of calls, can’t get to sleep.
Arko Brabant-Weitkamp.

Alice in Hunger Land

"Stephine,Stephine!" I walked around our private forrest aimlessly looking for my sister. "Stephine! You promised we would only play hide-and-seek for an hour! Its been 2 already!" Nothing happened, no sister popped out of a tree or anything. "Urrg. Stuff this." I pulled out my iPhone and stomped over to a tree complaining to my BFF of the week how I got cobweb in my hair and dust on my baby bue dress. I heard my phone start beeping like I was typing. I looked around confused and saw a moking jay sitting in the walnut tree behind me. It soared to the next tree and looked back at me as if telling me to follow it. "Urrg I'm going crazy." I thought to myself as I trudged through the dark, dank forest. The evening sun had started to set giving the forest a creepy feel. All of a sudden te Mocking Jay stopped. "So what do you want now stupid bird." I asked frustrated and tired from from the long walk. The bird looked at me as if urging me coser . I took a step forward and then another with my last I heard a sickening crack and suddenly...I FELL!!!

That was the first page of a cool story by Jessie... so if you're ever passing by come have a look at the book and read it, maybe. The box will be sitting around our class...somewhere.

Teacher's Message
Well, this term has been so busy, I'd better get in a message before it ends! Marae stay was rather different and special, as Georgia has written about in the news. It was sad that Siri passed away, but good that we could farewell her at school and at her tangi. Well done all those kids and families who went up to Ruatoki. Specially well done to the kapa haka people who sang at the graveside.
Athletics went well. Lots of successes. Brady and Lila shone from our class. Interschool went well too. We won the relay!
Year 7 & 8 intensive is coming up, which should be fun.
The high schools are asking for information about our lovely year eights. I'm trying to tell them how wonderful they are!! "They can't be that good!"
"Yes honestly they are!"
"What, even Molly?"
"Well...."
Kia ora tatou
