Awakeri School

Room 14 in 2010

Who are we?

We are an awesome class of year 7 & 8s. We have 27 awesome kids. There are 11 girls and 16 boys. We also have the best teacher in the school Mr Hawkes. Our awesome website monitor is Bryce.

Class news

15th December Today I'm writing my last website post. Last night was Fancy Dress. The year 8's got their leaving awards and we found out who got the principal awards. They were Brianna Goodman, Hamish Inwood and me (Bryce Coulter). All of our dances went well. The highlight of the night was the power point with the photos of the Yr 8's. Today in class we have to finish our Math investigations. Yesterday we finished our picture books then we went down to room 1 and read them to them. At the end we gave them to Mrs Wardell to keep so her class can read them. We are finishing Tom Sawyer. Tonight is the social YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is really fun. It start at 7:00pm and ends at 10:00pm. Bye.

13th December Omg. Whenever Mr Hawkes tells you to do a maths investigations on the area of something in the school, don't be a blonde and pick 'how many grains of sand there are in the sand pit?'. And I'm going to warn you now, what I'm about to say is so child labour!!! First we had to find a bucket and see how many cups there are in that bucket (there turned out to be 4 and a half) and then we had to see how many tablespoons went into the cup. And then after that after that we had to see how many teaspoons went into the tablespoon. And after that, how many vivid lids into the teaspoon. And finally, how many of Bryce's battery pack thingy-me-bobby capsules go into the vivid lid. Yet there were still too many grains of sand to count. So we had to work out the area of the battery thing and the volume of a grain of sand and then we could figure out how many grains of sand there are in a battery thingy-me-bobby thing. Finally figured out how many of those go into the bucket and then see how many grains of sand are in the bucket. So then we had to see how many buckets fit into the sand pit and times that by how many grains of sand there are in the bucket. So yea.
That's how you find out how many grains of sand there are in the sandpit. Do you want to know how many there ended up being. ae?. We'll there were 206,389,300,000 grains of sand in the sandpit. There you go. A big lot of information you didn't really need to know. And that's what we learn in Mr Hawkes's class!!!

6th December Today our class was doing PAT maths test online in the computer suite and then the Internet crashed so we lost all our work. Some of us were at the checking stage and Mr Fitz said that we might not be able to recover our work YAY we have to do it again NOT. Last Friday I did my radio broadcast and when I came out I saw that I achieved my goal to annoy Mr Hawkes. We have got broadcasts all week to listen to. Also on Friday we won a flag game that Mrs Merry taught some of the year 8 last year so we played against Rm12 and won YAY we are way better than Rm12. Our movie that we are making is almost finished we probably finish it today. It is way better than Rm12's fairy tales.

1st December Today it is the deadline to finish filming the movie them we start editing. Mr Sheather has got a new editing program and we are going to be the first people to use it. Also if we are good till interval we can move our desk to where ever we want. We are starting our fancy dress dancing today YAY NOT. Last week intensive was fun way better then school work and fancy dress dancing. Yesterday we started writing our radio broadcasts and we will continue today. My theme is annoying Mr Hawkes which I do well, so it should be easy. We got our last lot of homework for the year today YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

23rd November We started filming our movie YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have done three scenes already. We hope to get our awesome movie film finished early next week. We can make a way better movie then Rm12 ever could. Last week it was inter-school athletics and of course Awakeri did very well and we won the main relay race. Three of the runners in that race were from our class. They were Tiaan, Nikki and Holly. Beat that Rm12 (who only had one person in it)! Last week when we had Mrs De Jong we did some art. I will put some pictures in students' work later in the day.

16th November Last week we went to the marae. The powhiri that we were welcomed with, was a really good experience. We then had a history talk of the marae by on the men that did a speech in the powhiri. The walk we went on was fun because we learnt about the history of the area. We went to the waka shed which we leant about the Mataatua and the Hinemoana wakas. The Mataatua waka is not the one that was in the great Maori migration but it is similar to that one. The Hinemoana is a waka that can be paddled by women. At the cave we learnt about the three markers that one of the men on the waka was told about to find the right place and they were: The rock in the middle of the river (you can't see it now it has been blown up), The cave and The waterfall. Back at the marae we did the art project and the other two classes did their mihi and flax flowers. When they left we waked up to the pa site at Kohi point. We went to the waterfall and talk about how there used to be a flax mill and a flour mill next to the steam. We went back and played around waiting for kai.
After we had our kai some of us played rugby with some of the kids that came down to the marae. After that we went in the the dining room and we listened to some stories of things that happened in the area. We had supper then we went into the wharenui (the building we were staying in) and listen to each other mihi. In the morning we welcomed Rooms 13,11 and 10 on to the marae. Our speakers did really well and we sung Taku Rakau really well. While the other rooms went on the walk we made flax flowers. When they got back the other rooms did one of there three things that they had to do and some of us helped Siri do flax flowers while the rest of the class went to the waka shelter to finish their art assignment. Then it was lunch time and we had sandwiches which we call subway. The other classes did their other activities. After all that it was time to head back to school.
Today we have Mrs De Jong and we also had her yesterday bcause Mr Hawkes is busy doing other work. I think we will be doing our radio broadcast because for homework we have to listen to the radio for half an hour. Also we are going to be starting filming our movie soon.

5th November Yesterday Mr Hawkes said that Rm 12 had the best page on the website so now I have to make Rm 14's one better! Yea yesterday we had athletics sprints but one thing that Rm 12 don't have is someone who broke two records. Tiaan Brownless broke the 200 metres and the 100 metres 11 year old boys record. It was funny because at the end we had a relay with the teachers and parents against four people from the each house that hadn't been in the first house relay. Of course the teachers and parents lost. It was funny because Mrs Elliot tripped over just after the baton change. Next week we have the marae stay and we have heaps of parents coming. It quite sad that Rm 12 just about couldn't come so we were lucky that we had enough parents.

29th October To read the most awesomeness person in the world, Aroha's story, scroll down to Students' Work.

28th October We have all been writing stories that we thought would make a good movie. Yesterday we read each others stories in groups and had to decide which stories to put through to the next round. After four rounds of reading, thinking and discussing, we decided on Ben's story on Fainting. Aroha's one on Step Sisters and Jordan's version of Girl were really cool too. We'll type them for you to read.
Puberty talks today and tomorrow yay!

14th October I'm annoying Mr Hawkes again by solving all the challenges on the board. Today is the day that we make all of our in door display things. YAY we get to miss out on class work. This morning we had a big talk about this guy inventing this robot thing that makes you immortal. We are now learning the songs we have to sing at the Marae. Tomorrow we have AG day and the whole class has something to do. We have an animal or a job because our classroom is the control room tomorrow.

11th October YAY we are back at school JUST JOKING. This term is going to be a very busy one like most in this class. Here are a few example of what we are this term: radio broadcasts, a movie and many more. We are finishing our S.R.A soon. On the board we got a NZ history pretest so that might be our social studies for a while. I know that next week home work is a math revision sheet, yay more math to do. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This morning I was annoying Mr Hawkes by solving all of his challenges. Also Mr Hawkes will put a new Teacher's Message on after I remind him.

17th September Today we are having a break from production rehearsals because we are in the theatre next week and all the props are going in today. The other day we were playing this game where we have to say buzz when there is a 2 or a two times table. We got to 21 and Mr Hawkes had to say buzz but he said 21. I think he needs to find what numbers have two in it!
Next week is the last day of tech for this year and the last tech day at primary for us Yr 8's. How sad. All the open days have finished now. Yesterday at the Trident open day we went around the school and at the end we could go rock climbing on their rock walls.

10th September We have been doing heaps of production rehearsals in the week. Only next week left for rehearsals at school and one in the theatre the day before the Tuesday show. Today we wrote our pepeha. We have been doing our calendar art. We have to do these pictures and symbols that represents us or something like a virtue. Some of us have finished them.

2nd September I have put some examples of our scrafitto art. Go down to students' work We first put a border on a piece of paper then four different sized circles and four or five wiggly lines. Next we doubled lined them and coloured in the part where there wasn't any double lines with pastels. After that we put at least two coats of Indian ink on it. Then we got something that is half sharp half blunt and scratched away the ink on the coloured parts. After that it is compete. Also the challenge has been solve but not by me but Elise.

30th August I'm sorry for not updating my page for almost two weeks. Today we have Miss Robb because Mr Hawkes is doing Kapa Haka. Last week we did more art but the final one we had to be in partners and one stay still and the other one was drawing. Then we swapped over. Also we didn't put who we had drawn on the front but on the back so when we showed the class we could guess who it was. Also we have got a challenge that I'm trying solve that is worth 7 house points and getting higher by the day.

18th August Today we were doing drawing. We were drawing some people and suddenly Bradley, who was a model, dropped to the ground from where he was standing. I was drawing a different person and then I heard that thump, so I looked over to where Bradley had been standing. I saw him lying down and I thought he fainted, which he had. Luckily Bradley was OK, but people had to draw him sitting down for the rest of the time! The other models - Elise and Tiaan - survived OK!

16th August Sorry for not updating my page for a long time. Today we were talking about the flooding. We also watched a video on the Herald website that has Sam McPherson in it. Sam was describing what the floods in Whakatane have been like this weekend. Check it out on the Herald website. Also with Miss Robb we have been doing this art called scafittowell I think that is how I spell it. I will get some photos of it when we are finished it.

6th August Awesome Room 14! We got five people into the speech finals... Holly, Elise, Sam H, Sophie and Aroha. They did really well at the semi finals yesterday, so now we can enjoy their speeches again on Tuesday night, 7pm.
All of our speeches went well in class.

Here's Michael giving his speech. He used a powerpoint. "Eat my dust!"

3rd August Today I solved a challenge that has been on the board since the end of last term. This was the challenge make this into a true statement (8+1/2) = 2 x 12 x 7. I got 6 house points for Rata!

29th July Congratulations to HOLLY and AROHA.L for getting a silver in the Eastern Bay Of Plenty science fair. SAM did well in it too, getting a silver as well. We have also been having lots of fun listening to everyones speeches, but we still have to listen to 8 more. We have also started and study about . . . . . SLAVERY!!! We were asked to write up two questions and then we had to answer them from a book we're reading called Sarny. The book is about a girl that's a slave that's is set free and is going looking for her children. Well that's what's happened so far. We can't wait and see what going to happen through out the rest of the book.

26th July Today we are starting the dreaded speeches today. Jordan is starting them off with his speech. Also in week 5 we have hockey and soccer day. Only two people in our class are doing hockey and that is Mitchell and me! We play hockey for the Awakeri school team. So 25/27 people are doing soccer in our class alone and there would be a lot more from the other classes. Also we have started our new topic on slavery. One of the stories we had last term related to slavery in the U.S.A It was called Night John and we are now going listen to the sequel Sarny. It should be good.

22nd July Hi we are back at school after a fun two weeks holiday. Next week we have speeches. Yes the dreaded speeches. Tomorrow we are going to find out what day we are doing it. In the holidays I looked at Mr Hawkes teacher's message and spotted two mistakes. Yes two mistakes and that is bad for a teacher. So I emailed him and he has fixed it up.
(Um, can you put the -ed on fixed please Bryce?! - Mr H) (Is this better Mr H ?!- Bryce)

1st July Woh, congratulations to Holly, Nikki, Aroha and all for doing so well in the interschool cross country. Holly and her team blitzed the senior girls event: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th . ...

30th June Today we have some of room 12 in our class because Mrs Merry is at inter school X- country. Scroll down to student work to see some art we did with Mrs Bateson.

24th June Today is science fair. There is judging going on at the moment. We have got this new Dreamweaver replacing the old Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is the program that we edit the web pages with. Only a few computer suite computers and one of our class computers have it. All the computers will have after we get used to it.
We have done it!! We have done the full journey with My Greatest Feat. Room 14 have done 1736.4 km in total and 3,038,669 steps. Woh!

17th June Hi I'm back YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding, I wish I was still on holiday.

14th June Hi I'm Elise and I'm just filling in for Bryce while he's away, on a cruise! Today we had Life Ed and Cabhain drew us a wonderful picture of a computer. Shirley kept calling Cabhain, Jabin so now Cabhain has an artist's name!!! Jabin is a cross between Jaydon and Cabhain. Yes we also learnt about peer pressure, choices and decisions. But the thing that stayed in our brains the longest was Jabin. We also saw a movie that Harold made about peer pressure. In the movie is a girl called Anna and her friends pressure her into having a smoke. I guess we will have to wait till tomorrow for the end of the movie. Our world cup studies are going very well. Here's a quick fact: Serbia is the biggest exporter in raspberries. I also forgot to mention that I played on the electric guitar in a concert called Rising Starlets. In our band is Alicia, Ashleigh Georgia and me. We are all called Shadz of Red.

2nd June We had the big World Cup country draw yesterday....Mitchell is very happy, he drew Brazil for his country in the World Cup, Jordan is complaining that his North Korea has been at war for 70- years with its neighbour South Korea, which is also at the World Cup!
Welcome to our new girl Tayla, who comes from Matamata. And farewell to our intrepid web site monitor Bryce, who is avoiding the cross country tomorrow by going on a cruise in the Pacific! Well, at least he'll take his pedometer with him and walk around the deck of the ship, if it's not too hot out there Bryce! He'll be able to record his steps on the MGF website. Make sure you zero that pedometer every day Bryce!
Mr Hawkes had to put up a tricky challenge on his white board, to stop Aroha L coming in every day and solving it before school even started. She's given up on this one though. It's.... if you counted one number every second, how long would it take you to count to a million? Obviously the answer is a million seconds, but Mr H wants to know how many whole days and left over hours, minutes and seconds it would take. Aroha will have to find something else to do before school!
Here's the whole list of World Cup countries....

1st June Yesterday we did 115km for the My Greatest Feat. Altogether we have done 584.8km and we have done over a million steps that is a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today we are drawing out of the hat to see who is doing what country for the soccer world cup. On Thursday it is cross-country.

26th May After two days of using the pedometers, we have walked a total of 166km!! Not bad! Some very active people are getting high scores. Check out the MGF website to see what its all about.

20th May On Monday we started doing poetry. We have 5 groups that do different poems book every day. We are almost finished The Hobbit. On Monday the "My Greatest Feat" start. It is when we have to walk/run the distance that the All Whites go in South Africa. Today we got our pedometers to practice with at fitness time. We have to keep them at because Mr Hawkes thinks we might forget them and we make break them. Also we could cheat!

14th May Sorry I haven't updated my page for days I started doing the news page and forgot Rm14 page. This week we had Tom Holani in our class from Rm13 because he couldn't go to camp due to a broken arm. Today we are getting our science fair books. Homework for the rest of the term is Science Fair, which is in the last week of term.

30th April Today Mr Hawkes is reading the Hobbit. We started listening to it last term and we still got heaps to go. This afternoon we going to play room 12 in Awakeri Rulz.

23rd April Today we are doing camp art. We have to paint a scene from camp and it has to meet this criteria:

1.You are the subject, must show feelings.
2. Action
3. Overlapping
4. Disappearing
5. Distance
6. Colour texture

21st April On the last week of term it is science fair. We have to choose what we do for it in the next couple of weeks. Mr Hawkes is showing us how to do a science investigation and the question we are looking into is "Does the air pressure in a ball affect how far it will roll?" We are testing that theory with 5 soccer balls pumped up to certain air pressures.

19th April Today is our first day back from the holidays. We know one of our social study topic and that is the soccer world cup. That comes with being in a class that has a soccer-liking teacher!! We going to have a fun eleven weeks of school. Also we've got a new boy in our class and his name is Jordan.

31st March Tomorrow is our last day of school and it is also April fools day. I will put any jokes on the website that was played on Mr Hawkes.
(Hey Bryce, there's no school tomorrow! No, just joking, getting ready for tomorrow!! - Mr H)

26th March Afternoon We have just counted our money and we raised $531.40. That is a lot of money and we only had 5 groups. If we had 6 we would have got even more.

26th March Morning Today is our fun(d)rasier day. We are very excited!!! We are setting up after play lunch. Scroll down to students work to see some Haiku Poems.

25th March Today we published our Haiku poems on the computer and we have got them up on the wall now.

22nd March We have got a bronze medalist in our class and that bronze medalist is (drum roll) Michael Howard. He got a bronze medal at the Eve Rimmer games which are games that disabled people can do. He got it for running and he got ribbons for horse riding. Also on Friday is our fun(d)raiser so we need to bring our stuff we need on that day.

17th March Click here to see lots of cool photos from camp. Our highlights included: Judge Howard in the mock court, Dean's jelly making, getting bounced off the blob, being brave at Waimarino, games of scrag, Cabhain's sister and swearing to tell the horrible facts. Scroll down to Students' Work to read some of our thank you letters.

15th March 10 Today we are busy with camp letters. We went on camp last week to Blair Lodge at Katikati and we had heaps of fun. I'm going to start a photo page later on today and I should have it on by Thursday. Tomorrow we have tech and our last swim until the end of Term 4.

3rd March 10 Yesterday we went to tech at Edgecumbe College and the year 8's made notice boards. The year sevens made some awesome pencil cases. They even sewed their zips in.

1st March 10 Next week we go on camp at Bal. Lodge at Katikati. We are going to Martha goldmine at Waihi, Waimarino and some other stuff. It should be fun. We should have heaps of photos to put on the website.

23rd Feb 10 Our camp is only two weeks away from today. It will be fun as.

16th Feb 10 Hello Yesterday we got our consent form for camp. They have to be back by Friday the 26 of February. The price is $120.00 which is a lot.Yesterday we also sent letters home to the parents that went on our Otarawairere trip. One of the letters is down in the students' work part. Scroll down.By the way I am also the Envio team member for our class.

Students' Work

Stepsisters
by Aroha Ridley

I loved growing up as an only child, so much that I still live with my mummy and we still have game night every Wednesday. Yea, that was the life until the year 2008 when I was just 21 years old. My mother announced on game night that she was seeing someone, (Mario), and she asked him to move in with us. Problem with that, well where do I start. First off, Mario had a child, also 21 years old, which means she would take the spotlight off me for sure. And the fact that our house only had 2 bedrooms in it, meant that I would have to share our bedroom, and by our, I mean MY bedroom.
Anyway, fast forward a little and there are boxes, boxes everywhere.
"O.k., since you're going to be living in MY room, there are a couple of ground rules:
1) Stay on your half of the room
2) No bouncing on the beds
3) Lights off at 8:30
4) No talking after lights off
And most importantly, number
5) NO touching my teddy bear collection"

"Whatever."

All seemed good until I got up the next morning and needed to go to the bathroom. I walked into the door which was super glued shut. Oh, I knew who did this. Patarama. Oh she's going to pay. Just as soon as I go to the toilet.
I was alright. Yea, I was until I realized that Patarama glad wrapped the toilet.

Fast-forwarding again.
This is when I get Patarama back.
It took a lot of work but I finally did it, this should be good.
"Ahh, there's spiders in my bed, get them out, ewww, Ahh".
I love the sound of a morning scream from Patarama.
She carried on screaming while she was running out of my room but instead ran into the door which I super glued shut. Sweet, sweet victory.
That's when my victory turned into disaster.
My mother and Mario must have heard all the screaming and ran into the room wondering what was going on. Obviously they found out what was going on and then she said something I never thought she'd say for as long as she lived.
"If you two don't grow up and get along, you can both move out".
I thought I was going to have to move out for sure but Patarama and I talked and we made a deal. If we get to do one more prank on each other than we would get over each other and act like grown ups.
Unfortunately, I thought I had the best prank ever, but she thought of the same prank and we both ended up walking into super glued doors.
Congrats to our new family!

Camp letters:

Dear Mrs Gow
Thank you for transporting me to the bushwalk and Sapphire Springs. I enjoyed the bush walk because we had to do the tree test. I got two out of four because Dean did totara, ponga, kauri and tawa. Mock court was funny because you did the talk about the horse poo!
From Jaydon

Dear Mr and Mrs Holani
Thank you for taking me in your car when we had to go places. Also for with all the activities that everyone did.
I really enjoyed doing the kayaking at Waimarino because it was my first time. It was really funny when I fell out the first two times, but the other three were really annoying. The blob was real awesome because Sam.H bounced me really high. I think I was the only person who went feet first into the water off the blob!
It was great having you at camp
From Rico

Dear Mrs McConnell
Thank-you very much for coming on our camp. Also thanks for bringing your camera and taking pictures of our class so that we can remember what a good time we had as a class at Blair Lodge. I think I have over come a lot of my fears at this camp, like jumping off the high diving board at Waimarino water park. I have also made some new friends and got to know some parents a bit more too. I have really enjoyed this camp!!!!!
Thank you again for everything
from Ashleigh Tucker Witehira.

Dear Mr Turpie, Kenneth

Thank you for taking three very loud, talkative girls (A.K.A Nikki, Aroha and I.) to Otarawairere. Thank you for helping in the water. We wouldn't go swimming if it wasn't for you. Also thank you for helping in our group. You were very funny. I learnt a lot on that trip, like snails move by snailing around. Also I learnt that the low tide pools are only 3 degress colder then the high tide pools. Also don't EVER GET DRESSED IN CUTTY GRASS. Because when you are in the water your legs will sting like crazy because of the cuts. But I really enjoyed the trip. I hope you did too.

Yours sincerely ...
the one the only ...... SOPHIE, Me. Made By SOPHIE.

Teacher's Message
Thanks for reminding me Bryce!! Welcome back to the last term everyone. Scary how fast it goes. Soon a lot of these lovely students will head off to high school, and others, like Bryce, will be going as well. We look forward to the marae stay, Ag Day, athletics, movie making, radio broadcasting, getting reports, year 7 & 8 leadership training and special events!
Kia ora!

Barrie Hawkes

This is our awesome teacher Mr Hawkes.
