Awakeri School

Room 14 in 2011

Who are we?

We are Awakeri School's class of the century. Our class is made up of year 7's and 8's ranged in age from 11 to 13 year olds. We all have our very own talents. Some of us are dancers, singers, soccer players and much more. We are a bit of a noisy but friendly and creative bunch. We have a great teacher (so far ) Mr. Hawkes. He is a fan of the Wellington Phoenix and likes music. I think most of the year 8's are looking forward to a great year. So hopefully every one in our class will have an exciting and fun year.

Class news

12th December Unfortunately this is the last lot of news to be put on this page for the rest of the year. We have been reading the novel "holes" and today we plan to start watching the movie. We have all really enjoyed reading the book and i think we will enjoy the movie just as much.We are all looking forward to socail and fancy dress, especailly the gay gordan at fancy dress. We would like to thank Mr. Hawkes for teaching us, we had a great year.

1st December We have been studying radio stations and what they have on them. We had to make our own radio station. The people that have a good enough radio station get to do it in front of the the whole school. Some people used themes such as Sports, Cars and even being normal. Some people told jokes and made times and peoples names up.When we were "broadcasting" we sat in the cloak bay and used a micraphone for words and we had to put the micraphone up to a stereo if we wanted to play songs.

18th November Lately we have been doing technology challenges with Mr. Sheather like on Wednesday we made light houses the class was divided into two groups, then the groups were divided into teams the team that got the highest from the first group was Dylan Hoefsloot and Edgar Smits with 163 centimetres, Then the second group the best team was Ashleigh Dixon, Mekaela Learmond, Daniel Perkinson and Dillon Murray with 174 centimetres. So the record is now 1 metre and 74 centimetres and the two teams with the best scores, each person got a little moro.

Dillon Jessie and Millie
An. . .interesting photo of Dillon. You guys! This is school, you're not meant to be having fun!
Nikoli being hounded by Jordan
Nikoli had better speed up. Jordan has almost caught up to him! Don't fall asleep, Edgar!

31st October Lately we have had Mrs Broadhurst and we were doing rubbings for art. What you have to do is draw a picture then layer the picture so it looks 3D. Then you put a piece of thin paper over top then rub a crayon on the piece of paper the imprint should come though on the paper.
Lately we have been studying radio stations. We will be making our own radio station in the next few weeks. Today we listened to Mr Hawkes radio station from last year - Faint Radio. He made it after Brad Bateson's incident last year. More will be written about the radio stations later.

6th October Lately we have been studying slavery and we got to write stories about it. Scroll down to Students Work and you can read a few. I hope you enjoy reading them. With our slavery study we have been reading stories about a girl named Sarny. The first book was called Night John and the second, which we are still reading, is called Sarny. We have also been learning about slavery in New Zealand which was when there was Maori Warrior fights the losing tribe would be turned into slaves. We have enjoyed our slave study and I will put some more stuff about it later on.

20th September Jalen is back from his painful holidays after getting his appendix removed. He spent his time off doing nothing because he couldn't do any physical things and he will not be allowed to do any more for another 2 weeks. So boring for him.
Production tonight first show so that should be fun for him to miss, ha ha no he gets to watch us.
On Friday about 13 year nines from Whakatane High School came to our school for some fun maths stuff. So we have something to look forward to next year. Here are photos from it.

14th September Lately we have been doing our calender art we have to think a message and then show it with a picture. They range from "Music can solve all the worlds problems" to "Smiles make the world go round" and most importantly "SOCCER RULES". The Rugby World Cup is quite a big thing for our class considering most of us are ambassadors and we have to find out the scores of our countries games.

6th September Today we have been doing some maths to do with the rugby world cup like finding out who is playing in their first world cup and lots of other cool things. We are just leaving for tech, the boys are finishing their vibrots and girls are making ginger beer, so that will be fun.

30th August Today we had tech it was a lot of fun the boys made vibrating robots and the girls made bread. Also Edgar Smits and Daniel Burgess were left alone... DUN DUN DUN.

29th August Today we have Mrs West, we are doing some fun maths, which involves, making a dice game, Hannah and Katy's was one of the best ones so the whole class played it. We are also writing imaginary conversations, some examples are, Cicada and the tree, the book and the reader, the pen and paper, etc. Tomorrow we have Tech, so far this term we have made: Bread, Butter ambrosia, cheese, ice cream, and vibrating robots!

These are the four amazing students that are unfortunately leaving juring the holidays. This is our last full class photo with Luisa, Matthew, Grace and Mikayla in it.

11th July This is our last week with four special members of our class. Luisa, Mikayla, Matthew and Grace are all moving away. It will be sad to see them go on Friday. Their new schools will be lucky to get them. We hope they appreciate that! Luisa is an awesome student, creative, artistic, friendly, helpful.... Mikayla is full of enthusiasm, she organized a whole school fund raiser last year for flood victims... Matthew is a really responsible person, who can do a good job of anything.... Grace just loves her music and dance. Good luck to these cool people.

7th July We are nearly finished our Fantasy adventure stories. They are looking really good. Here's a bit of Luisa's story called Slade. If you want to download the whole story, click here.

Chapter 3- Tour of Slade
He turned and walked at quite a speed toward the town centre. It was late in the day and only a few towns’ people mingled in the windows of heated stores. Xavier stood in the city square.
“This is the Slade, a wonderful, magical world of fantasy. It’s like the world that you humans depict in those silly fairy tales of yours. Anyway, this is the land of my forefathers that is now ruled by my selfish father soon to be inherited by myself.” He seemed to lose himself in his description.
“So, are you looking forward to it?” Alaina asked. Xavier returned to reality.
“No. I wish to see the world and not this world, your world and lucky for me you are going to take me there like you promised.”
“On with the tour first.”Alaina said reminding him of the agreement. They continued. They ended the tour by visiting the fruit stands outside the giant flower store.
“This is one of my favourite places in the whole of Slade.” Said Xavier.
“Really? The fruit stand? Are you serious?” Alaina asked.
“It’s not just any fruit stand, it’s the only fruit stand with the special knock-out berries which are great for pulling pranks on your little sisters.”

We all have some cool ideas such as roller coaster bridges, Swing bridges and much more. They are all looking good at the moment.

23 May lately we have been doing some graphics. We had Mr J from Edgecumbe College come and show us how to draw things using a Vanishing Point. We drew a picture of a corner store, we had to draw doors and windows that had to end up in line with the Vanishing Point. We drew nets and then made puppets out of them. Then we made puppet shows and went round the junior classes and showed them our puppet shows. Our puppet shows had to be to with firewise or a virtue.

13th April Today we read a story called 'Bamboozled'. It's about a girl that goes to her grandad's and every thing is weird. So after we read it we had to draw a part of the room that had been bamboozled and we had to write a 6 word memoir.

8th April Dillon why am I writing this?? Today Room 14 students were very brave. They had to play me a song on the guitar and sing it. They did very well. Some people were surprisingly good singers! The different students sang lots of different songs that they have learned over the term: Surfin USA, Blue Suede Shoes, Proud Mary, Big Yellow Taxi, Ten Guitars, Delta Dawn, and so on. Lots of people played and changed their chords well on the guitar. Have a good weekend - Mr H.

21st February Lately we have been learning about haiku poems. The Haiku poem is a form of Japanese poetry. It is made up of three lines. It usually has five syllables in the first and third line, and seven syllables in the middle line. A Haiku has a cut: two meanings which enrich the meanings of the first half from the second half. They also have a word to do with one season. Scroll down to Students Work to read some of our Haiku poems.

21st February The count down is on until our camp at Blair Lodge, it's 8 days away. The whole class is very excited. We will be doing orienteering around Katikati, swimming in the river, jumping on the blob (A pillow shaped object). One person sits on one end the other person jumps on it from a cliff onto the blob and sends the other person flying...

17th February The last couple of weeks we have been studying about the planets in our Solar System. We had to find out the average temperature of planets and things like that. One of the books we were getting information from said, "Jupiter's core can get up to a temperature of 20,000 degrees Celsius". We have to model what day and night would look like from space.
Two days a week Mr. Hawkes has been out taking tests and things. Mrs. Parker has been teaching us, we have been writing name alliterations. We had to write them around the outside of our name which we wrote and coloured in with pastels.

11 February There have been lots of elections this week. Edgar Smits is our rep on the Enviro team, Hannah is reserve. Millie Patterson and Nikoli Christensen are our reps on the school council, with Katy and Tom reserves. Nine of us were elected house captains. See the News page for those names. Dillon Murray has been appointed room 14's web site monitor.

Students' Work

Walter’s worst nightmare
The year is 1704... Dear diary I’m on the dusty dirty roads of America with Walter Berg driving me along, that’s where I saw and heard through the carriage window someone selling 1 year old slaves to 60 year old slaves. Then I hear another noise “$150 for the dark skinned 30 year old.” Then I yelled, “STOP pull in at that drive way” I told Walter.
“Walter I’m going into that place to stop selling slaves around town. Pass me my Letter from the President.” Walter hands it down to me. I walk into the room I could smell sweat from them working all day. I walk up to the slave owner and tell him he has to stop selling slaves because it is now illegal. The slave owner said NO then stabbed me straight in my heart.
The last thing Walter heard was me scream.
By Millie Patterson

RESCUED

It was just normal day in the plantation, people working getting tired. I had refused to work today so they whipped me, so now I’ve big whip marks down my back. When it was time to go back to the quarters I heard a gunshot, I turned around and I saw the owner just fall to the ground. At that moment I knew that he had been shot dead. I had seen it I didn’t know what to feel, to feel happy, sad or angry. And then I heard one of the slaves yell “blue people “
And as the Blue people ran passed I knew that they were on our team. Four of the men dragged out big cannon and aimed at the house and put a big metal ball in the hole. They lit the fuse and ran away and then it just blew up and they just blew up the house and then the red people came...

Being sold

It was 1762 I am 30 years old and I am a slave. I work in the fields as a field slave. As I walk in side to my box, I smell old people. I am just about to get my monthly food ration salt-herrings and corn meal, not the best. I could see a salesman walk in. He is a slave buyer. He walks up to me and says “$25” so I was sold. He was taking me to a better place; he was taking me to be a house slave.

Camp Songs:

Tom needs to spray (To the tune of his own song)

Spray the toilet,
Spray the toilet.
Tom, Tom, Spray the toilet

We went to Blair lodge camp
and tom went the toilet,
but no one else could go,
Because he didn't spray.

Spray the toilet,
Spray the toilet,
Tom, Tom, Spray the toilet

Nikoli

BMX (to the tune of Hey Soul Sister)

I was on the BMX track on the 3rd of March
I didn't know I was gonna almost run you over
Mr Hawkes
Im so sorry I was going so fast over that jump
I knew I wouldn't get you, I just wanted to scare you
Mr Hawkes - ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

(chorus 1) Hey there Mr Hawkes you should know better then to
video, y'Know
Did you think I would be slow?
Hey there Mr Hawkes it was so funny when you
jumped out of my way
way way way

I got called up in mock court for endangering your life
The jury found me guilty and so I had to sing a song about bikes
Im so sorry that I missed out on my oppitunity
to squash you like a banana underneath a ten tonne logging truck

(chorus 2) Hey there Mr sorry that I miss ya' on the
track that day, by the way, theres one more thing I'd like to say
Hey there Mr Hawkes you should be grateful we weren't
learning to drive tractors... that day!
day day day

That day!

Haiku Poems about the Christchurch Earthquake

Walking through the square
earthquake smashing hot warm lives,
living survivors
Daniel Perkinson

The quake of Christchurch
It's not very happy, but
Here's a survivor
Matthew

Walking down town crash bang
An earthquake help! Oh no
The dust blocks the sun
Edgar

Walking through the square
A boulder comes I run
I'm Trapped In sun
Aaron

The Christchurch earthquake
Smashed many lives, While the sun
Is burning
Liam

Walking down the street
Then a huge earthquake happens
The hot town is crushed
Nikoli
Buildings crashing down
Help me, light shines through a crack
Im out and alive
Luisa
The sun shines brightly
Then a huge building topples
Like Lego sculptures
Katy
Walking through the heat
I can hear the earth groaning
Here comes an earthquake
Hannah
  The Christchurch earthquake
Destroyed lots of homes and lives,
But theres still hope
Tom

Teacher's Message
We're half way through term four already! Class is busy and fun, with athletics, puberty talks, radio broadcasts, and the Year 7 & 8 intensives coming up. It was good to see lots of Room 14 helping the juniors with their athletics events. Soon I'll have to start writing reports. Bribery could be the way to go! No, Room 14's students shouldn't need to go that far!
