Awakeri School

Room 14 in 2016

Who are we?

We are room 14 we have 29 students and we are a variety of year 7 and 8's. Our awesome teacher is Mr Hawkes. We are the best class in the school!

Class news

17 December Bye everyone! Happy holidays! Go well at high school year eights! The last couple of days we have had some great entertainment with the exercise ball. Games of rulz with it have added a new dimension! We also chose our favourite poems and they will be on the wall for next year's students to read. We also finished our radio broadcasts. They were all good, very entertaining, with Matthew Reihana's the most hilarious. We will also remember Vinnie's singing of the Boil Up Song, adverts for Cody's Cooking, Taylor's Skipping, etc.
Bye to Miss Reeve, we will miss her a lot. Check out Mr H's song to Miss Reeve that the teachers sang to her yesterday. It's on room 13's page. Merry Christmas!

12 December With Mrs G we are making fun board games for the middle school our the juniors. We are also making some kiwi Christmas trees LOTS OF ART! The year 7s are busy organizing the school social for all of us year 8s. We finished lots of pop art and some Maori patterns that are now up on the wall!

7 December Many thanks to the Trident year 9 APEX class who sent us this collection of Christmas maths puzzles. Can you do them all? Can you spot Emily Robbie's special one for Mr Hawkes?

5 December Only 2 more weeks! Our class is training hard for fancy dress with the Gay Gordon and the American Promenade. The girls are also getting their dresses ready for the social next week while the boys don't even think of it!.....Some of us are also checking our younger siblings toys for water guns and balloons for next weeks water fight!

1 December Well, the end of the year is getting closer! We enjoyed the intensives last week. We have had half of our radio broadcasts and they have been really good! Some funny ads, very good use of the genre, things like radio stations' names getting repeated, jingles, interviews. Some people have very easy names to pick on! Cody Cook's cooking classes have been well advertised! As have Taylor Skipps' skipping classes.Today Vinnie sang his own music (The Boil Up soing!).

13 November We didn't get to the marae because of a tangi, but we did have a school powhiri. Our girls got to karanga to Whaea Andrea and our boys did the whaikorero, with Mr Fitz and Mr Hawkes replying. We then welcomed rooms 13, 10 and 11. We have also done some nice kowhaiwhai patterns (mangopare and ngutu kowhai) and played some mau rakau. We have 12 students going to the interschool athletics tomorrow.

4 November In the last two days we've had athletics both field and track in the track. Benjamin McBeth broke a few records for the sprints! for the house relays Kowhai came 1st, Rata 2nd and Rimu 3rd! Better luck next time Tawa! Next week room 14 is having a marae stay at Wairaka Marae. We get to be there for the powhiri and some people from our class get to do the karanga to room 13.

1 November Athletics Field Events are tomorrow and sprints are on Thursday. We are all very excited. Our winners of the A League Predictions were Samuel/Regan with four points. We got 1 points if we chose the right team to win. And we got a bonus points if we got the right score. We only got a bonus point if we chose the right team. The Phoenix are still last on the A League table with no points, but only one point behind Adelaide United. Last Night the Nix took on Melbourne Victory and Unfortunately lost 5-1. On Saturday they play 6th placed Newcastle Jets, a great opportunity to win our first game!!

31 October A reminder that the important maths revision home work is due in tomorrow. Well done those people who have been getting help that they have needed to complete the work.

28 October Today we had the high jump finals, we had some great jumps! Cody Hall, Codi Laurent and Tayla Jones won their age groups. There were no records broken though. On Monday depending on the weather we will hold the 12 year old girls because some had to leave for music school. We are still training for ...Sprints, Discus, Long jump and Shot put.

21 October For maths today the boys studied football. They looked at the A League table and worked out how it goes. They predicted the results of this weekend's games. They also found out that the three year seven non-footballers had the best skills!

We were focusing on getting the right sizes for all of the features, it was quite a challenge but in the end we all finished. We are also beginning to finish our stories. This term we have a new student...Ben! We have read a book named Night John and now we are reading the sequel Sarny.

16 October One week gone already! Ag Day is over. Well done all the helpers who helped make the day run smoothly. Puberty talks this week. Excitement plus! We also hope to start practising for athletics, if the rain stops and the fields dry out a bit!

15 September Next week we have the production Conundrum. We have all been working hard almost every day of the week! Next week on Tuesday there is the Edgecumbe College open day. Lots of us have been to the Trident and Whakatane High open days this week. On Monday we have a big dress rehearsal at the Little Theatre and on Friday everyone who is in the production gets a day off. YAY!

12 September This week is pretty crazy. We have a props rehearsal today for production. Haylee and Ryann are selling tickets before school.
Tuesday: Some people are going to tech at 9am, because school is closing at lunchtime. Some people are going to the Whakatane High open day. Some people are wearing costumes because it's book character day!
Wednesday: Dress rehearsal! Also Trident open day at 9.20am. Be back for rehearsal as soon as you can!
Thursday: Props rehearsal at 11am. Hopefully we also get to start publishing the findings of our maths investigations. We have sorted through the data of over 200 people for our questions.
Friday is nearly a normal day!

28 August Well done to Matthew. He won $120 at the BOP Science Fair! Check out the details on the News page.

23 August We are off to tech today. The senior maths celebration was cool the other day, well done to Ethan, Cambell, Codi and Alex for organising their activities. Last week everyone passed their guitar test. The singing was the freakiest part. Except Mr H forgot about Regan so he will have to go this week! We have just started SRA for reading. We are finishing writing our own fantasy / adventure stories and then we are publishing them. Paige and Sam have about finished! Today we researched how many results Google comes up with on our names, as part of maths. Daniel Brown got the biggest number!

11 August Today Room 14 and 15 went to the Trident High School's dress rehearsal for Hairspray. It was an amazing show! We had a sheet to fill in about the props and acting and the singing! Go see the show! It opens tomorrow night.

2 August Welcome back to term three. Wow it's a busy term! Science fair this week, Life Ed this week, Tech on Tuesdays, a trip to the Trident High show Hair Spray next Thursday, Soccer / hockey day Friday ... We have got a guitar test coming up. Everyone has to play a song for our teacher, and sing! We have also been making some more cool models and robots out of technic Lego with Mr Sheather.

6 July Congratulations all those Room 14 people who got big parts in the production!! Amber has a main lead, so have Alex R, Cambell, Tayla, Ryann (a man again!) and Lucy. Half of our class got roles.

1 July Room 14 have been going to Mr Sheather. There we have been making lego inventions. Some people have made inventions that make music and some have made one that spins around and around. We used a motor to do this. We have also started writing fantasy and adventure stories.

Alex Cameron and Bradley Burr work on their technic lego project. Lucy Knott tests out her's and Aleisha Boyce's crane. It works!
Mr Fitz calls in to watch Ethan Cavey and Jesse Deane at work. Kaleb Muggeridge and Matthew Reihana-Asquith work well together.

28 June No doubt lots of students will be busy doing science fair in the holidays. If you have a free morning, the Kawerau Library is doing a crime scene investigation from The Fat Man on Tuesday 12th June at 10.30am. That could be fun! Maybe followed by a swim at the Kawerau warm free pools!

22 June Yesterday we had Mrs Plews for the morning when she was with us she showed us a video of her brother who had brittle bones. He invented his own wheel chair that helped people like him to do things that they couldn't do. He also did a lot of fundraising to help people with difficulties. But unfortunately a few weeks ago he passed away after an accident he had during a marathon.
On Monday we had Mrs Cass. With her we did art. There was a shape on a piece of paper that we had to make a picture out of. Lots of us came up with creative and funny pieces:

Amber Fort turned the shape into a mirrow looking out of a window into London city. Alex Robbie has changed the shape in a jelly bean being eaten!

Lucy Knott changed the shape into an island in the middle of the ocean.

10 June Today we had our speech semi finals. We had 6 students in our class take part: Haylee, Cambell, Tayla, Matthew, Lucy and Alex. Five of them from our class got in to the finals, which was Alex, Cambell, Matthew, Tayla and Lucy. Good luck to them for Tuesday night! Yesterday we went to the production Rock Of Ages from Whakatane High School. It was awesome. There were lots of songs and brilliant dances and hilarious parts when we were laughing so hard we could fall out of our chairs! We all enjoyed it. They did an excellent performance!

25 May Our first speeches are today. Good luck to Bradley, Lia, Cambell and Ryann! We have started doing fair testing for science fair coming up in term 3! Yesterday our class threw and caught a ball off a gutter board with one hand 10 times and then two hands. We found that catching with two hands was a bit better than catching with one hand, but not as much as we expected. Our totals were: One handed 93, two handed 104.

20 May Cross country is next week. Everyone is really nervous, we have been doing fitness almost every single day! Next week we also have speeches. Everyone is a good way through writing their speech. We have been studying Parihaka and we have also listened to some poems about Parihaka. We also starting to get really good at Spanish such as the alphabet, counting to 20 and even some equations. We also know how to ask Your telephone number please? (Tu numero te telephono por favor?) and What is your name ? (Como te llamas?).
Today Sam East did well to stay as number two in NZ on Mathletics for the whole day. Good one Sam!

18 May Scroll down to Students' Work to read a couple of beautiful bits of writing that we have written based on the writing in The Hobbit.

13 May Ko tenei te Paraire Pango!

10 May Speeches are coming up! The teachers have decided on 5 topics: the effects of smoking, keeping bullies at bay, safety at play, a healthy role model and what is a healthy body image. I'm sure everyone is excited! We also have cross country coming up. Mr Hawkes has started reading us The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien.

5 May Welcome back after the holidays! The Fun Raiser went really well at the end of last term. Our class raised just over $1000 in the lunchtime and with Room 13 we totalled $1920. Thank you very much for your support. Three of our groups made over $200: Candy Crush $288, Food $263, Mix Up Madness $254.
This term we are carrying on with guitar lessons. Yesterday we finished that fantastic Maurice Gee book The Fat Man. We are working hard to learn basic Spanish and can say greetings, how are yous and farewells so far.

12 April Fundraisers coming up!!! So room 14 has been working on change,We have lots of different stalls such as The Scare House, Flying Fish, Food, Mix up maddness, Gutter Board Challenge and Candy Crush! We are all very excited to open up our stalls and sell as much food or games as possible on Thursday. Everyone has at least finished 1 NZ auther study, Yesterday some people read a paragrapgh of their story to the class. Today is our last day at tech the boys are doing cooking and the girls are making some boxes shaped as books!
Mrs Wardell has been teaching us for the last two weeks! We all shared our 24 challenge that we made to the class, and at the start of the day everyone had to have a current event ready just in case she picked you out we had some really interesting ones such as Cat Armour !! and everyone was nervous to share their pepehas with the class for homework.
Now Mr Hawkes is back and we're nearly finished reading The Fat Man by Maurice Gee

24 March Scroll down for a new teacher's message. Happy Easter!!

16 March We have been reading N.Z. Authors stories, also we are reading the Fat Man by Maurice Gee.

9 March All our students have successfully recited at least the first two verses of the poem Te Kaititiro O Te Po, by Katarina Mataira. It's a cool poem in Te Reo Maori about an owl and what it sees in the night.
Some students made up some cool songs about camp for one of the extra homework tasks this week. They based them on tunes like Adele's Hello, Drift Away, Ten Guitars and so on.
Well done to our swimmers who went to the interschool swimming sports yesterday. It sounds like they did really well, and Awakeri won the relay!
Gutter board is the popular game at the moment. It started at camp, then it has spread since we came back. Tayla Jones and her dad made a nice new blue gutter board. Codi Laurent borrowed room one's board and we also were lent room 11s one. So the deck is full of people queuing up for their turns in break times.

1 March We just got back from camp at Aongatete Lodge. Check out our cool photos here. Scroll down to Students' Work to read some cool haikus.

11 February Our class goes to technology on Tuesdays! The girls are making T-shirts in soft tech and the boys are making a cupboard with a white board in hard tech! We have swimming on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Students' Work

Writing based on The Hobbit paragraph one...

My brother's room
In a room in a house there lived my brother. Not a dirty, smelly, broken room filled with all the chocolate wrappers and an old pack of chips, nor yet a clean, tidy, nice room with a nice looking bed to lay down on: it was a boy's room and that means fun!
Cody Cook

Inside a frame on a wall there sits a quote. Not just any old, boring meaningless quote. Nor yet a long waste of time reading quote. This was a series of letters and symbols written and crafted to make a difference, to reach out to the reader and make them visualize the words as pictures, to feel the meaning put into it and maybe just maybe these few words could make a difference.
Amber Fort

On the road in the street is a car, not a filthy halfpai Toyota Corolla, with crusty metal, it's a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento with a big v12 engine, with big alloy wheels, that means comfort.
Tiaki Hori

My brother's room
In a room in a house there lived a boy. Not a clean, airy, vacuumed room, filled with the fragrance of Lynx, nor yet an empty, cold, sad room with nothing to do: it was a messy room, and that means hazards.
Paige Carter

Supplejack
The weird taste of beans
Lingers round my mouth so good
As we eat the tip.
Paige C

Speed Slide
All clear! Speed down, jump
Exhilaration rushes,
Bubbles dance round me
Alex R

Branches surround us
Torch beams pierce through the darkness
Leaves reflect the light

Spotlight
Lights shine brightly
in my eyes, pitch black sky
people run to hide

"Want to touch the ball?"
he said with a big chuckle
"Oh please do not cry!"
