Awakeri School

Room 14 in 2015

Who are we?

We are the best class in the whole school, we are a mixture of year 7 & 8s and our teacher is, wait for it ...... Mr Hawkes! He is the coolest, funkiest and funniest teacher ever but he does have a dark side he's not just fun in games! He does make sure that we're working hard and he will have to growl every now and then!

Class news

14 December Good Bye! What? Didn't you know its the last week of school. Yep tha'ts right school will be finishing on Friday. On Thursday and Wednesday we have Fancy Dress and the year 7 and 8 Social. I cant believe that school is nearly finished. Thank you Room 14 for making me your website monitor. My favourite thing about Room 14 is their singing. Mr Hawkes pulls out his guitar and opens up the song book and starts singing. This is my favourite thing about Room 14. I hope next year you will have a great website montior and good Luck to all year 8s going on to high school, Room 14 wishes you all the best! So good bye to Rm 14 the class of 2015.

10 December We have 2 students in our class who are the fastest in the Bay of Plenty. These students are Emily Robbie who is the fastest girl and Kaya Hodson who is the fastest boy. They both won the 800 metre race in the BOP champs yesterday. I think that they should race to see who is the fastest out of them. Kaya also got 2nd in the 400 metres, 3rd in 200 m, 3rd in 100 m and 4th in long jump. Emily got 3rd in the 400 metres, she got 4th in the 100 m and 200 m. Well done Kaya and Emily! Ben O was part of a relay team that came 2nd and he was 5th in the discus. Campbell F got 1st in long jump with 4.29m. We have also just finished our radio broadcasts (YAY!) today we had "Santa Station" by Jessica Bell and it had some good music.

3 December We are on our way with our radio broadcasts, we only have six more people to go! Today we had Manaia with "Pancake FM", Gene with "Radio Active" and Ryan with "Steak FM". We also are staring to practise for fancy dress. The year 8s are practising their haka, and we have students in our class that are in the school orchestra. They will be performing on fancy dress. They have been working hard to get the music sounding right. We wish them all the best for the performance. We have also finally started swimming but let me say it is freezing!

20 November Today we had our first two radio broadcasts. Jake Rowling with his station called Waste Your Time FM and Reaf Bruce with Bro FM. There was a lot of comedy as well as Reaf singing his songs himself. They were great and hilarious.

13 November On Monday we have some students going to the Athletics Eastern Bay interschool which is where they compete to try to get to the Eastern Bay Champs. Good luck to Rylee Looney, Emily Robbie, Kaya Hodson, Ben Olifiers, Caden Laurent, Troy Wilson, Jake Rowling.
Emily Robbie and Jake Rowling finished the camp video yesterday and we got to watch. It was hilarious. They did a lot of exploring and one part they rewound it. The Room 14 Camp DVDs are three dollars each. Orders close on the 20th.

22 October Last week for homework we had to write an interesting sentence about the holidays without using the letter e. Not an easy task, but some people managed to create some pretty cool ones. Scroll down to Students' Work to see them. Savanah even managed to write 7 lines without an e in it!

19 October Welcome back everyone! Its term 4 and we all ready have such a busy week. On Friday it was Ag Day and now we have some students that went to Group Day, these students are: Emily Robbie, Stacie Martin,Caden Laurent, Oliva Sheaff, Oliva Benner & Jessica Bell. Well done you guys! This Friday we have a Rugby World Cup day. We are put into groups and play games to earn points for our team.

11 September In the last week we had a student in our class that went to Aims Games. Troy Wilson played Squash he came 25th out of 51 people. He won 4 games and lost 2 games, he has done well. Kaya Hodson, Emily Robie, Campbell Forsyth went to cross country. Check them out on the cross country photo page.

3 September We have just finished reading a book called "Holes". The book is also been made into a movie, Mr Hawkes has let us watch the movie. We had to compare what has changed from the book to the movie. Look down below in Students' Work to see some of the writing we have done about it.

19 August Here are a few of our portrait sketches. We can work out who most people are from the accurate drawings. Do you know these people??

Drawn by Gene Brown. Drawn by Ben White.
Drawn by Shayna Penberth. Drawn by Kaya Hodson.

17 August Today we did our final portrait sketches. Here are some of the artists and models in action:

Reaf is drawing Ben's portrait. Next door Emily is hard at work drawing Shayna. Ben O is drawing Manaia, while Manaia reads his favourite graphic novel.
Stacie works on getting Rylee's eyes right. Jake draws Gene. Gene's drawing of Jake was very impressive. Watch out for it on this page soon!

14 August We have been working out our Spanish pepehas this week. Something like:
ꜟHola! Soy de Nueva Zelandia. Mi abuelo se llama Charles, mi abuela se llama Heather. Mi padre se llama David, mi madre se llama Beverley. Mi hermano se llama Jeff, mi hermana se llama Olivia. Me llamo Señor Hawkes. Me Gusta el futbol. ꜟHola!
But today.... some people made fantasy Spanish pepehas, like Ryan:
ꜟHola! Soy de Cook Islands. Mi abuelo se llama Gandalf, mi abuela se llama Kim Kardashian, etc
....and Emily:
ꜟHola! ꜟSoy de Hogwarts! Mis aluelos se llaman Matt Freeman y Kyle Blueman.
Mis abuelas se llaman Holly Short y Annabeth Chase.
Mi padre se llama Artemis Fowl. Mi madre se llama Lauren Adams.
Mi hernamo se llama Alex Rider, mi hermana se llama Valkyrie Cain.
Me llamo Emily. Me gusta el futbol. ꜟHola!
...and Reaf:
ꜟHola! Soy de Inglaterra. Mis abuelos se llaman Steve Jobs y Pele.
Mi abuela se llama Mary Poppins. Mi padre se llama Vin Diesel, mi madre se llama Kate Middleton.
Mi hermano se llama Dwayne Johnstone, mi hermana se llama Miley Cyrus. Me llamo Manuel Neuer.
Me gust el futbol. ꜟBuenos dias!

31 July We have finished reading The Hobbit. Scroll down to Students' Work to read some cool responses people wrote about the book, its characters, favourite scenes, etc.
If you call in to our room, you can see the letter the Prime Minister wrote back to us, you can see our art work too.

22 July Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a great holiday because this term is going to be busy. First we have Science Fair this week, and in a couple of weeks we have production starting this year the show will be Sheik, Rattle & Roll. So good luck to all those Rm 14 students that would like a part in the production.

1 July Tomorrow is our last day of school and the year 7s & 8s are pretty busy these holidays with science fair. These are some of the project ideas: Emily Robbie is making a brick smasher, Caden Laurent is making a bird feeder, Olivia Benner is testing something with bright colours and Meadow Howe is testing "what kind of battery lasts the longest."

26 June Today we had our Test of Pain (it's not the test your thinking of) it's a test to do with x6 ,x7 & x8 tables. We get a couple of equations thrown at us and we have to work them out in 4 seconds, even if we get one wrong we have to write it out 10 times! Most of us survived and some of us has to spend the lunch time writing them out. (it's not that bad).
(Hmmm I must make the pain worse thinks Mr H)

23 June At the moment we are trying hard to nail our x6, x7, x8 tables because on Friday there is another test of pain! Last week there was some painful writing out of tables and this week looks like there will be some more!
We are getting into science fair mode, most people have started work on their projects. We are also learning well about area and volume. Yesterday people figured out that the formula for the volume of a triangular prism was half x base x height x depth.

27 May We have been writing some cool paragraphs based on the writing of the opening of The Hobbit. Here is Callum's one:

On a bare soccer pitch in London there was a soccer ball. Not a grotty, flat, worn soccer ball, filled with water from the Sunday kick a-bouts and smelling of the sewage ponds down the road, nor yet a rock-hard, slightly worn soccer ball that felt like you were kicking a rock: it was an Adidas F50 soccer ball and that means perfection and excellent goals being scored!

26 May We have now all finished speeches. There were some very cool ones. Now we will have to see who will be in the semifinals on Friday.
Some highlights:
Keegan "Do you want food that is pretty or that is good for you?"
Keeley talking about the healthy use of rat poison!
Liv's entrance as an ambulance!
Emily's friend Keith.
Ryan reminding us that bosses can look at your social media pages, so be careful!
Shayna telling us what a phlebotomist does!
Olivia shocking us with some of the ingredients in fast food.
Caden telling us about salt content.
Ben O teaching us about using stevia rather than sugar.
Manaia's magic tricks (see below)
This Thursday we have our guitar test. We have to play and sing a song for Mr Hawkes. There are a few nerves!

21 May We have been doing speeches for the last few days. One speech I want to tell you about, a speech that made us all laugh, this speech was made by Manaia. His speech was about how there is only one of him. It started off by saying about himself, how he likes pancakes, blowing stuff up and beating people up on his play station! He showed us 2 magic tricks. Those 2 magic tricks were making Campbell disappear and a white board marker disappear. He got us all to close our eyes while he hid Campbell behind the teachers desk, and then he turned around so we could not see him while he put the white board maker down his sleeves. Then his two favourite dance moves. Those 2 dance moves made us laugh a lot!

8th May Room 14 has been working really hard in class. We have just started angles in maths, we have also been doing Spanish and we have started a topic called Parihaka for Social Studies. We have just finished our NZ authors reading and we have all read a paragraph to the class.
Sharaya Rangiho was reading a book called.. "And did those feet" which is an old book and the last thing she read was.. "They kept us busy at school and the work was easy. The teachers, what can you say?"
Mr Hawkes said..."that they are wonderful, handsome, intelligent..."
and Ben White says" at THAT school!" everyone burst out with laughter!

30th April Wow already 2 weeks into the trem and there's so much to write about. Firstly the Funraiser was a blast! We all had fun. Secondly yesterday was the school's Cross Country and some of our students have made it in to the interschool Cross Country. They are Rylee Looney, Caden Laurent, Kaya Hodson, Troy Wilson, Callum Mcneil, Campbell Forsyth, Emily Robbie and Reaf Bruce. Ben White and Emily Robbie have also been doing the Kids Lit Quiz last night and they came 1st! We are all so proud of you guys, good luck!

2nd April Over the last couple of days we have been starting our Fun Raiser stalls for next term. There are Horror Houses, Food stall, Hippy House and Fear Factor from our room. We have been making posters and signs. We are starting advertising skits.
We have been reading a book called The Fat Man. It was very scary book.

Holes by Louis Sachar
Novel v Movie: Holes
I will be looking out for the part about the sploosh, and when Zero gets sick from the bacteria inside it.
I think the movie covered it very well, because Zero was vomiting it up. I think putting the sploosh in the dirty jars was very clever, because it showed how old they were. I think the movie was very good, but the book was better.
Ben W

How they will show the Mary Lou in the distance and when the bully dunks Stanley's book in the toilet.
They did not follow the book exactly like when Stanley went to find Zero, he wasn't walking up to the Mary Lou, he was just there. There was no bully in ther movie who says Stanley was in the toilet at 3:15. Stanley was in the toilet fishing out his books.
Savanah

I was looking out for if the movie was the same as the book. When the little kid Zero (Hector) got sick on the mountain it was bad. The movie showed it better with the pictures. Manaia

What I was looking out for in the movie holes was warden putting her poison nail polish on that she made herself, I`m seeing if it was the same as what we heard in the story.
I thought the book and the movie were about the same. Warden scratched Mr Sir`s face after she put her wet poison nail polish on her nails. Then Mr Sir had a fit and acts all different. That bit had happened in the book as well.

The Hobbit
I think the book The Hobbit was really cool because there were lots off characters. They were really cool. Smaug was an evil dragon and Bard was the one who killed him. Bilbo was a brave and he was a helper of the dwarfs and he was known as a burglar. My personal response about the book was that it was awesome because I liked the characters. I also liked the part where Smaug was killed and where Bilbo gave the Arkenstone to Bard.
by Inder

Bard:
Bard is the dragon slayer. He tried to keep the peace and not bring the war. Bard is the new leader of the people of Lake Town and he made a good leader he did everything fair.
His part in the story:
So Bard part in the story is to be the good leader and to try keep the peace, and not start a war.
My thoughts:
I think he made a good leader he kept the peace and did everything fair and did not run away when time got tough like the old leader did.
If I could tell him something I would say well done. You did good looking after your people when time got rough and you did very well to take down Smaug.
By Liv B

Smaug
Smaug was a fierce, magnificent dragon. He was feared by all of the people. He spent most of his life sleeping on all of the treasures and gold of the dwarves under the mountain. He is very intelligent and can tell if someone is there due to the change in the air and the person's scent.
As most dragons, he enjoys a challenge but becomes very annoyed when the sneaky hobbit comes and he couldn't recognise the scent. Bilbo, being invisible, managed to steal one of Smaug's many treasures, and because of this Smaug worked out one of Bilbo's many mysterious titles and went to seek revenge. He decided to attack and destroy Laketown, and he quickly set off on his rampage. He succeeded in destroying Laketown but never got his treasure back, he never got back to any of his gold and jewels because Bard shot him in the only unprotected part of his stomach with a black arrow. He died writhing with bitterness, and disappeared under the water. Still people feared him and no one dared to retrieve the jewels imbedded into his scales.
Personally I would not ever want to come across Smaug or any dragon with the same mindset as him, luckily he's dead. Though I think talking to him could be very interesting due to his significant amount of knowledge. He is a nasty character but again from his point of view that might just be normal for a dragon.
by Emily

BOMBUR
Bombur is the lazy one in the group. He is always last one to do anything and hates been told what to do. He's always at the back of the group because he's fat and chubby and grumps all the time so Thorin always make him do everything.
In the story Bombur falls into a deep sleep because when they were going through Mirkwood they had to go over a magic river and Bombur fell in. If I was to meet Bombur I would say you're my favourite character and you're funny and cool in the book.
By Jessica

Gollum
The character I am writing about is Gollum. He lives underground in Moria, and in my opinion, if it wasn't for him, Bilbo would have died many times, for he had the ring. Bilbo found his ring, and when Gollum challenged him to a riddle competition, Bilbo used the ring to win (which was basically cheating).
Gollum is very ugly, and big round eyes for seeing in the dark. He is a wretched little creature whose diet consists mainly of fish, and the occasional goblin that gets too close to his cave. He used to keep the ring in a pouch close to his skin, but removed it when it burned him. He wears no clothing, except a rag. I feel a bit sorry for him, because he lost the only thing he ever cared about, which was the ring.
His part in the story is to nearly eat Bilbo. I would not like to meet him unless I had a very large gun and lots of bullets, because he would probably try and eat me, which I do not wish to happen. If there was one thing that I could say to him, (although with today's technology I could probably say a lot more), it would be this German proverb: If life gives you lemons, burn them all.
I can relate to Gollum a lot, because we both hate light, as you can tell if you look in my wardrobe, and we both like eating raw fish. I think Gollum is just a very misunderstood person with some slight personality quirks, which could be ironed out if he took some counselling courses. I am pleased to say he also features in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, where he basically saves the main characters in that book as well, by taking them through Moria so they can destroy the ring. So Gollum, in my opinion is the untold hero of The Hobbit.
by Ben W

Gollum
My character is precious. I like precious because he is scary. When Mr Hawkes talked like a zombie pancake and it was really funny. Precious likes fish and he likes to eat goblins as well, but I like to eat fish and I like to eat goblins too ! But the main thing I like about precious is his ugliness.
By Manaia
