Awakeri School

Wairaka Marae July 2002

Siri Riini gets the junior school organised behind Vivienne and Sarah who will do the karanga and lead them onto the marae.

Kenny Murray is doing the Whaikorero (speech) for Rooms 10, 3 and 9 at the powhiri (welcome).

Jade and Gareth get ready to perform the karanga and whaikorero for Room 11 to welcome Rooms 10, 3 & 9. The senior students are teachers for the day. Here Gareth is teaching his pupils an action song.

Emma McLeana and Aimee McIntyre read books in the Maori language with the pupils.

Alex Hilford gets his pupils reading.

Kenny and Dylan are outside Muriwai's cave.

Here Mr Hawkes is telling the juniors about the carved waka (canoe), that they are looking at.
Miss Stuckey and her class look at the new Mataatua waka. The carvings on the side show male and female paddling the waka. Mr Hawkes is talking to Rooms 10, 3, 9 and 11 about Wairaka Marae. Room 11 are sitting in fornt of the wharekai (dining room).
Jade and Michelle lead their junior pupils in an action song. Kenny, Dylan and Jerome have a novel way of teaching about the murals in the wharekai (dining room). They get into a rap about them!
