This was the 35th time Awakeri School has run its speech contest. (to see the past winners go to the Academic Archives page). There were seven finalists, from the 15 semifinalists and the 70 year 7 & 8 students who did speeches to begin with! The judges this year were the principal Peter Fitzgerald, Ross Macdonald (he won the shield in 1969) and Jill McLeod (an English expert).

Here are our seven finalists. Ready to give their best: Matthew Webb, Emily Julian, Elana Spod, Caroline Paulsen, Felicity Klein Ovink, Amelia Howe and Lucille Smits. Good luck! |
Amelia was first up. She tried hard to inspire us all to keep fit. |
Caroline talked about self confidence. She whipped her black cape off and revealed her true self! |
Is that a cigarette Emily is holding, no it's only a prop! Emily spoke very strongly against not starting smoking. |
Matthew was very funny, talking about why people shouldn't smoke. He listed ways you could die from smoking, including your parents finding out! |
Lucille gave us lots of advice about not spreading germs. It made us want to rush out and wash our hands! |
Felicity talked about all sorts of germs. No Felicity there is no such thing as "boy germs!" |
Elana used props and some cool diagrams to help us keep safe with dogs. Her dog wasn't very well behaved in the staffroom! |
The finalists all used great techniques for getting their messages across. |
At the end, chief judge Mr Fitz gave everyone feedback, |
and congratulated them. Felicity came 3rd, Confident Caroline came second and.... |
Emily came first. Well done! Thanks everyone for an entertaining evening. |
