~AWAKERI SCHOOL~

Maths Celebration Day Sept 5 2013

It's a Maths Celebration!
The day finally came! Senior Maths Celebration Day. Our maths extension group had planned it for weeks, designing challenges, making the resources, testing them out, modifying them, etc. Mr Sheather is introducing the senior school to the day. The syndicate are in 16 groups who will rotate through the 8 challenges. Standing up are the expert organisers, plus a few teachers.
Battlestations!
One activity was battleships. Here you can see both sides of the game. Finn is in charge of the right hand side and Georgia the left.
Corbin - match this!
A tough challenge was the matchsticks activity. The most completed by any group was three. Corbin Jones is pointing out an idea to his group. They don't look too impressed! Georgia was in charge of the area activity. If you estimated the first problem accurately, you got to choose which measuring equipment you could use for the next challenge. A cool idea! Here's Felicity estimating the width of the court.
Luella tries to convince Fliss that her arm span is exactly one metre! Renske and Michael / Nicholas got to use the 50m tape measure for their area challenge.
Linette and Lachlan Adele
Linette and Emily designed some really good number challenges. Here's Lachlan checking out his group's answer to see if they could move on to the next one. The number line activity was fun. Teams rolled two dice, one was +ve/ -ve and one was a number. The aim was to get your player off either end of the plank. Adele is the pirate in this turn.
Sam is on +ve one. Where will the die take him? Kevin and Noah designed the orienteering courses. Kevin's group are trying to find their way.
Korben and Tawari put together tangram challenges. Korben ran it by himself, Tawari was off sick. Here are Marco, Tylah and Lachlan thinking hard. Nicholas / Michael, Rylie and Chai are puzzling this one out.
It was an excellent morning Well done the maths extension group and Mr Sheather. All the groups had a great time and used their brains lots!
