Our whole kapa haka group, all 58 of them. Click here to see a bigger version of these two photos. |
Pukana mai!! This is our first kapa haka since the passing of Siri last year. The enthusiasm has been passed down to us all. |
We are warming up outside.... Emma, Shardae, Jack and Lilly are enjoying the fun. |
So are Keely, Poppy, Linette and Shardae (again) |
Andrea, our tutor, strums away. |
Jenae and Renske are enjoying the warm up too. |
Motoka Mawhero! Matthew and Lachlan keep up with the speeding pink car. |
The dress rehearsal begins. We are singing to our late teacher Siri. Moe mai ra te totara haemata..... |
Now it's the poi. All the items in this year's programme were written by or selected by Siri over the years, so Andrea put them all together as a great memorial to her mum. Huri atu, huri mai.... |
Now its the action song. It's all about the whakapapa of Awakeri students, what waka brought them to Aotearoa, where they're from, what their greetings are, etc. Anei ra matou, te kura o Awakeri, e waiata nei, i o matou whakapapa e.... |
Next the haka. This is without our leader Tawari, who had to go home sick. Korben did well to lead the group in his place. Tau ka tau, aaaa hi! |
Here's part of the big crowd squashed into the Events Centre lounge to see the rehearsal. |
Now we're performing at the Little Theatre. We open the show. Tawari brings the photo of Siri out before he does his korero saying that we are honouring our late teacher Siri. We do all items that she wrote or taught us. Siri's daughter Andrea has done a wonderful job teaching us this year. |
The choral remembers Siri and wishes her to rest in peace. |
Acacia, Maya, Lara and Charlotte show the unity this performance brings to our group. |
Now we're into the poi. Huri atu, Huri mai.... |
The ultra violet light shows some great lights from our poi moves. |
Ataahua! Chrystal and Renske doing the action song all about our school. |
Then it's the haka. Ethan gets into his work. |
The whole group view of the action song. That's a capital A for Awakeri! |
Finally, after Awakeri E, we finish with a chant. Whakarongo ake au.... Wairaka... kia whakatane au i ahau. Girl leaders Amelia and Poppy come forward, ahead of boy leaders Tawari and Korben. |
