Awakeri School

Farewell Barrie Hawkes 2019

Mr Hawkes has taught at Awakeri since 1986. Photos from our special assembly to say farewell.

The hosts for the special assembly were Kohen Laurent and Phoebe Carter. They were both in Mr H's class last year. Phoebe is the daughter of Leigh who was in Mr Hawkes's very first Awakeri class, back in 1986! The junior syndicate read a funny poem: Rose & Barrie's Bus. You know what's cool, About leaving school, Rose is buying a bus.......
Mr and Mrs Hawkes enjoy the poem, will it all really come true? Mr Hawkes is not so sure! Mr Sheather knows how to get some laughs with his poetry. Next up is a challenge to see who knows the most about Mr Hawkes, Caleb or ...
Mrs D plays guitar while everyone sings a song about Mr Hawkes. His class, Room 14, do the actions. Joel acts out the surf at Matata line with his yellow boogie board.
Caught being good. Yellow is the predominant colour. Isak even has a yellow cast on his wrist!
The kapa haka put on a great farewell performance. Whaea Andrea in yellow, the four leaders - Jon, Zealia, Jade and Jose - in front. Then Whaea Andrea did a moving whaikorero.
Ella, Mikayla, Phoebe and Celeste present Mr and Mrs H with a beautiful hoe (carved paddle) and some lovely earrings. Ex-kapa haka members get up to join in the final waiata. It was great to see Karaitiana and Tessa get up there too!
Kerry Hawkes does a Ngai Tahu haka to his father. Then it's outside for a football game!
