Awakeri School

Room 10 2007

Who are We?

We are a class of lovely yr 7 and 8 students. We have an equally as lovely teacher called Mrs. Merry. There are 30 of us awesome kids.

Class News

December 13 2007

This is our 2nd to last week. YUSSSSS... I mean awwww I'm so sad. Anyway yesterday Mrs. Merry started to read us stories about mysterious things that have happened in the Bermuda Triangle. After hearing those stories I'm not sure why people still go through it.
Mrs. Merry is still making us do maths as usual, but at least we don't have to
do homework anymore.

November 22nd 2007

We've started swimming again. It's not compulsory yet but it will be next week. Everybody tells me that it's warm, I don't really know because I haven't swum yet. The last couple of days we've been doing what Mrs Merry calls persuasive writing. I think that it's fun but I bet that heaps of other people in room 10 wouldn't agree with me. What we're doing is writing a statement of what we would say to a jury if we were trying to prosecute Goldilocks (as in the Goldilocks in the Goldilocks and Three Bears story). Tomorrow we'll be trying to get Goldilocks off. We'll write a statement of what we would say if we were pleading not guilty.
Next week is the year 7 and 8 intensive (I wonder why they call it the intensive). We're all looking forward to that.

November 15 2007

This week has been Awakeri gymnastics week. It's been heaps of fun (even though I was away for two days, the days I was here it's been fun anyway). Mr. Hawkes and Mrs. Shaw are the teachers there teaching us things like roly polies! Who knew there was a right way and a wrong way to do roly polies! It just shows us, you do learn things at school. While Mrs. Shaw taught half of us to do roly polies (the right way) Mr. Hawkes took the other half and showed us the beat board. You jump on to the beat board then onto a mat.
The teachers also got us to get into a group of 2 and make a routine demonstrating all of the gymnastic skills we learnt or could already do. Some of the best are going to perform their routines at assembly tomorrow.

November 5 2007

Our masks are really looking great now. Not to long until some of them are completed. The people that have done the most are up to painting. Some people (like me) aren't even up to putting the pink tissue paper over the news paper (I'm almost there though).
Guess what? Three people from room 10 got 1st place in high jump for their age! Emma, 12 yr old girls. Jayden, 13 yr old boys and Alex 12 yr old boys! Ooh and Jayden got 1st for every event he did (track and field).
Today we had our big maths exam (not quite as big as the high school).

October 23 2007

Next on the list of things happening at Awakeri is our school athletics. All the senior and middle school classes have been going out daily and practising our athletic skills. Room 10 is doing very well and keeping themselves fit... Well we're trying to keep fit anyway.
Room 10 has just started a new maths topic, Measurement, YAY... Well other then that school lifes as boring, Oh I mean as fun as ever.
There's a new teachers message if you'd like to scroll down to the bottom of the page

October 15 2007

On Friday we had our school Ag Day (agricultural day). Children of all ages took their animals. There was a wide range of animals from calves to cats. The people that took calves, lambs and kids all had to train there animals to obey them. Then the children and there animals had to do a series of sort of tests in front of some judges. If the children and there calves, lambs or kids did well at our school Ag Day then they get to go off to group day, which is a day where children from lots of different schools come together and compete against the other children that did well. Only two children from room 10 qualified for group day, Maurice and Fiona. I'm sure they will do great.

October 10 2007

Today is our first day back at school. Term 4! All of room 10 are sooo excited about being back! We can't wait to start learning again...
Anyway, We've again got a very full on term. Lots of things happening, like ag day and the school athletics. Also, more at the end of the term there's the yr 7 & 8 intensive and social.
This term room 10 are hoping to finish the masks that we started. I'm sure we'll get those done.
Today we (the children of room 10) got to choose where we sit for the term. Mrs Merry has alredy chosen some people that she is going to move. This was obviously going to happen considering everyone chose to sit with their mates.

September 9 2007

Today our school is doing a big clean up of the area around us. Room 10 has the job of cleaning up the area around the Awakeri dairy. We're going to have to be very sensible (as the teachers have said). But of course room 10 will be. I mean, we're just perfect angels all of the time...
The reason we're doing this big clean up is because it's clean up New Zealand week. Awakeri has been very good and has volunteered to help.
Today we got our last piece of homework for the WHOLE term, it was awesome. I may actually enjoy doing this homework just because it's the last piece I'll be doing for a while.

September 3 2007

Guess what? There's only 2 weeks until production! We've been going out for practice practically every afternoon which is just horrible for us kids because it means we miss out on an afternoon of interesting, exciting work *cough cough*. Mrs Merry and her backstage crew have been working hard on the props. She spent this morning trying to make a rock! Well try and make a box look like a rock anyway.
There hasn't been much else going on in our class lately. We've had homework as normal, maths, language, reading. Nothing spectacular is going on, except we are really starting to get stuck into our masks which is a lot of fun!

August 28 2007

So, Kate's back! She has informed us all that her trip went great! We're all very envious.
Well, sadly none of the amazing talents from the awesomest class ever (room 10) did not get into the group that are going to perform at the production! But that's alright because we know that they were good and that's all that matters. Scroll down to Students' Work to read some cool poems and a new message from Mrs Merry.

August 21 2007

Hello all. I Meron am officially room 10's new website monitor (you'll all be so pleased). I promise to fill you all in on the latest goss from room 10, oh I mean the latest news. Kate McConway is hopefully coming back to school this Thursday. She'll be devastated to find out that her Science Fair trophy has been taken out of her hands and has been given to a fellow Awakerian. Ben Fretwell.
Room 10 students are all looking forward to which awesome talents are going to be performed at our school operetta. There were 5 acts from room 10 so hopefully one of them are going to get in.

July 19 2007

Learned anything yet Mark?lets listen while shirley talks to us about choices.

Room 10 went to life ed for a learning session with shirley, their going again on Friday.
shirley has a pet giraffe named Harold he told the class a really funny joke here it is:
there were two men hunting for some dear one wanted to go one way and the other wanted to go the other way so the man that had more experience in hunting told him to follow the tracks (poo) so he did that night he didn't come back then the next morning he found him lying on the ground with his legs broken and his arms the more experienced hunter asked what happened he said "I got run over by a train".

July 16 2007

It was just the holidays and people the kids had a ball, people all around New Zealand someone even went around the world.
The school play is coming and the people with main parts should be practising.

May 14 2007

Today we had the speech semi finals.
We just went out side to see who made it in the final and they were... ... Kate McConway
(clap clap) Cameron Rio Kumeroa (clap clap) and Meron McCardle (clap clap). That's all who made it into the speech final from room 10 but there are more in different classes so please have a look in rooms 12 and 11.

This is Kate doing her speech on 'you are what you eat.' Don't take your speech too seriously Cam.

June 13 2006

Room 10 has been studying on the Rose Noelle and if you don't know what that is it
is a very famous yacht that flipped upside down with passengers inside. John Glennie the captain knew that there was a storm coming but thought he could ride it to Tonga.
You might ask how it flipped well here it is...
... it all started when John Glennie (the captain) built the Rose Noelle,
NO WAIT! That's too far back, O.K. John Glennie brought the yacht back to New Zealand from a long trip to Tonga he named the ship after a young woman called Rose Noelle in Tonga. He named it after her because she was the one who invited him over to Tonga, but when he finally got there he found out that she had died so he named it after her, to remember her.
A couple of years later John Glennie wanted to go back to Tonga so he searched for a crew, then he found Phil Holfman.
Phil Holfman started talking to John Glennie about the boat then John asked if Phil wanted to go on an amazing voyage to Tonga Phil said yes and asked if he could bring a friend so he brought Rick Hellriegel and Rick asked if he could bring a friend as well, so he did, and that's when Jim Nalepka comes into the story.
One day they all met together on the dock to set sail. Finally they set sail. That night the big storm hit and John Glennie knew it was coming his plan was to ride the storm to Tonga but it was stronger than he thought and the crew were nagging at him to put the parachute (that's something that goes in the water and slows the boat down) out but the waves were too strong and the parachute tangled up so that didn't work. After that it all calmed down but not for long. A big rogue wave came and flipped the Rose Noelle.
Those men were trapped in a cramped in a little place for almost 4 months.

-High Ropes.
-Flying fox.
-Indoor Hockey.
-Table Tennis.
-9 Stage Confidence course.
and a lot more activities but there are too many to name.

Thoughts and feelings about the story 'Once'

I really enjoyed the story 'Once' because it is so heartfelt and meaningful. This story kind of awakened me to what people can really be capable of. I sort of knew what went on in the war but I suppose I never really thought of it happening to real people.
I could never imagine walking down the road then seeing people digging their own graves. If I did I would probably do what Felix does and make up stories, I don't think I could handle the truth.
I would definitely recommend this book because it kind of gives you an idea and helps you imagine the horror that went on in the war.
I feel that Felix is an extremely nice person, he sacrificed his special notebook for people in… I suppose you could call it need.
I would hate it if (like Felix) I was in an orphanage expecting that unlike everyone else my parents were alive and going to come back for me. Then finding out that they were probably brutally murdered.
I think that Zelda (even though her dad was a Nazi and probably did horrible things) deserves just as good life as Felix. What I mean is that, like Barney says "Everyone deserves something good in their life at least once". Including Zelda.
I don't know what I would do if I had to choose to jump off a moving train or go to a death camp…
And I never want to have that choice.

This is Vanessa, Fiona and Reme's wonderful piece of art.

Room 10 has had this week to make and design an instrument made from recyclable materials.
And to do Me projects.

Its been ANZAC day now and the class is studying on it and found out some valuable information...
...Machine guns were not invented in first world war.

Once by Morris Glletzman

My thoughts and feelings about 'Once' were like "Wow!", this actually happened and no one could really stop it just like that. The story 'Once' shows an astonishing example of what it was like in W.W.II. How people had to risk their lives just to get a casual dinner from the market. Or even that some of these
people were highly innocent but still they were tortured and forced to dig their own graves. Felix was a character with a
magnificent imagination with a lot of hope and faith. Even when it was the worse of times. My thoughts were this story could one day be made into a movie.
My feelings are Shocked! I'm actually grateful that I heard about this story. Because the title 'Once' would not have inspired me to read it. It was absolute torture how they had to do their business in the corner of a very little Boxcar stuffed with heaps and heaps of people. Or even how earlier in the story Felix was asked by 2 Nazi children to play Jews and Nazis (a game where Nazis takedown Jews), I would have felt very
offended if I was Felix. Just imagine having a choice between several ways you could choose of how you had to die. 3 wishes. You , your Parents or a sibling to be tortured.
Or even to be taken away to an unimaginable life in a death camp. I never want to have to make an atrocious choice like that... knowing that your going to die 1 way or the other.
I would recommend this book to people who would like to learn about the awful way of living back then and compare it to how we live our lives now.

This is room Ten's school council (Alex and Meron).

Teacher's Message

Tuesday 23 October

Wow term 4 is well underway. We have started with athletics and hopefully some records will be broken this year. The children are looking fit and doing really well in practices.
Our topic this term is 'wise shopping'. We are learning about advertising and plateau pricing so that we are more 'wise' when it comes to buying Christmas presents. For art we are carrying on with the masks and making good progress, with most prople up to creating the features.
I would like to welcome Cameron to our class and hope he enjoys Awakeri School.

Tuesday 28 August

We are now working on our calendar art. We are drawing a group of our friends. First we take a photo the print it in black and white, from this we are drawing a picture using dye, plastic crayons and black pen. These are looking awesome and will be a great purchase for gifts.
Room 10 is writing some creative poetry as you can see from the examples. They are really extending their vocabulary and thinking deeply about how words and situations feel for them.
Keep up the good work!

Tuesday 21 August

Congratulations to our new website monitor Meron, I'm sure you'll keep me on my toes!
Room 10 have been reading about and creating cartoons over the last few weeks. We have some budding cartoonists in our class, with some entertaining. interesting inventor studies having been completed. well done room 10.
We are starting wor on our production Wind Dust, this week. Well done to those people who got main parts I'm looking forward to seeing your performance.
Skipping is still proving a popular fitness program and we have some very proficient 'skippers', hopefully the 12 min run will show improvement from this hard work.
Keep up the good work room 10!

Term 2

A fantastic time was had by all at Tui Ridge camp. There were lots of challenges and so much success, well done everyone children and parents.
Very shortly we will be holding speeches. I look forward to this activity as we always get some interesting, creative ideas coming through, remember 'X factor'.
Children need to begin thinking about their science fair project, first decide if you are going to do science or technology. For science you need a question , for technology a problem.
Good luck with deciding on your topic.
Cross country practice is well underway with some children pushing themselves to a good level of fitness, keep up the good work.

Room 10 had cool pages in 2006 and 2005 as well. Have a look!
